The FBI using 302s instead of recording devices is a hold over from the Stone Age and is a procedure rife for abuse and legal error. There is no excuse for not using recording devices when doing interviews. Everyone else does it. Why should
any law enforcement agency use a system that depends on the memory (and honesty) of the individual agent when a fool-proof and modern system is readily available?
Using 302s gives the agent the opportunity to craft testimony to their own liking, forget or leave out important pieces of information, and even allows them to use "lying to a Federal agent" as a means of illegal intimidation or prosecution. After all, it is the agent's word against the subject of the interview and the legal veracity is loaded totally against the subject. This system puts the one being interviewed into a legally questionable situation any time when being interviewed. The use of 302s should be abolished.

Back in the 60s one of my Mom's favorite shows was "The FBI" with Efram Zimbalist Jr.We used to tease her about it all the time.
She's long since passed but I'll bet she'd have a different opinion today.
