AFL-CIO Chief (Trumka) Warns Red to Blue Candidates That Being a Democrat Isn’t Enough

House Democratic candidates in town this week for training at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in Washington got a visit from AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka for some tips on how they can win back working-class voters.

“I don’t have to tell you that you can’t count on the D next to your name to gain our support,” Trumka told Democratic leadership and a room full of candidates on Red to Blue, the DCCC’s program for its strongest candidates.

This is the first time the labor leader has spoken to DCCC candidates this cycle, though he has done so in previous cycle. He told the congressional hopefuls that the AFL-CIO is prepared to lend them its support, if they embrace the group’s agenda. Democrats need a net gain of 23 seats to win the House majority in November.

Maybe it has finally sunk in to Trumka that vast numbers of his rank and file no longer pay any attention to the union demands that they vote straight democrat, and he better start at least making an attempt to play down the middle or he will be reduced to total irrelevancy.

Oh I agree. I have had the misfortune of being a member of three different unions early in my work career (which remarkably I still get junk mail from, even though it's been over a decade). I had no option to opt out as West Virginia wasn't a right to work state (though it is now). Two of the three unions did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, over the roughly four years I worked there I never saw a union representative once (though the dues came out of my paycheck like clockwork). The third union was even worse, they union stewards basically ran the place and management was so cowed they would never contradict them, at various times I got chewed out by the union steward for "working too hard" "not taking my full breaks" and "crossing crafts" (basically doing something that needed done that wasn't one of my responsibilities.) Thankfully I'm far enough along in my career that I no longer have to deal with unions...

Godspeed. Unions...especially the public ones...are nothing but an arm of the democrat party and just launder dues to democrats. The workers are held harmless because they don’t have a choice.

Something very anecdotal - was in a waiting room the other day and Let's Make a Deal was on a TV. Wayne chooses some nerdy looking girl in a banana costume out of the crowd, he asks, so what do you do? She says she's an attorney - Wayne asks what kind of attorney, she goes contract & negotiations, union stuff!! Woooo!! and starts jumping around like a loon. The audience just looks at her. Kinda reminiscent of the scene in Animal House where Blutarsky yells "Let's goooooo!", runs out of the room and everyone just blankly sits there. Safe to say the audience wasn't in love with unions. Or maybe attorneys. Or perhaps both.
