Some migrant parents who have been reunited with their young children say the children no longer recognize them, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
The parents told the newspaper that after waiting months to see their children again, the kids cried and didnt recognize them.
He didnt recognize me, one parent, Mirce Alba Lopez, told The Times of her 3-year-old son. My joy turned temporarily to sadness.
The parents also said the children believed that the other children they were detained with were their siblings.
The families who spoke with the Times were reunited Tuesday after a court ordered the Trump administration to reunify the families separated at the border under a since-ended administration policy.
Officials had until Tuesday to reunite immigrant children under the age of 5 with their families. The administration earlier this week said it would not meet this deadline, and in a court filing Tuesday revealed that 38 out of the 102 identified children would be reunited on time.
The administration on Tuesday essentially returned to its catch and release policy for immigrants, releasing migrant families wearing ankle monitors into the U.S. after courts prevented officials from holding the families detained at the border.
A top Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official also said Tuesday that the administration had paused referring immigrant adults with children for prosecution and had also equipped them with ankle bracelets before releasing them.
Trump has railed against the "catch and release" policy. His administration imposed a "zero tolerance" policy at the border earlier this year, mandating that all immigrants caught illegally crossing the border face prosecution.
That led to the separations of families and a political controversy that eventually forced Trump to issue an executive order ending the family separations.
Don’t want that problem? Don’t come here illegally. Simple. Now, where’s that tiny violin?
Be sure to sing your tale of woe back in whatever craphole you came from. There's a lesson, here: Stay home or enter legally, and these things won't happen to you.
Trump should not have caved on this issue.
Illegal aliens, stop abusing your children.
Liberals, stop supporting human trafficking.
As soon as you get back home, that will fix itself.
He is going to have to do something because more are coming. This Flores Ruling needs to be challenged or fast-tracked to SCOTUS.
How do you say ILLEGAL in a language that these Invaders understand?
bullsh!t
I do not believe this for one minute.
Yet, toddlers who haven’t seen a deployed military parent for six months to a year will. Maybe.. just maybe.. these aren’t the “parents” at all.
Oh my gosh! How tragic! I’ll have to run to Sam’s for a other case of Kleenex.
Dont try to steal into our country to steal from us, the taxpayers to make a better life for yourself and your kiddies - stay home and make that better life in your own country, as you arent wanting to become Americans bringing your talents and skills - all you want is our stuff weve created for us - not you!
Because they’re not the kids’ parents. They are the human traffickers who brought them in posing as their parents. Probably only saw them a few hours before being separated.
He needs to do an Andrew Jackson. Anyone know what the Constitution says about a president defying a court order?
I’m hoping there’s a red wave in November then Trump unleashes the dogs.
Actually, it can happen - briefly - to young children. If they’ve been separated for a while, at first they may not recognize their parent because their hair looks different or they are wearing different clothing. The problem resolves itself within 15 minutes after the child has a chance to hear their voice and talk to them.
Crock of shit story!
Probably because they never saw their “parents” when then were living in their home country. Just because their parents neglected them isn’t our problem. Send them back.
Sadly the 3 year old youth described in this story could no longer understand the native language, having been instructed in proper English.
