A record number of Americans are quitting their jobs to seek better opportunities, according to Labor Department data first reported by Bloomberg.
The rate of U.S. employees quitting their jobs reached its highest rate in 17 years, rising from 2.3 percent in April to 2.4 percent in May, when 3.56 million Americans left their jobs.
Rising quit rates are considered positive because they often indicate employees are leaving their current positions for jobs with higher wages and better benefits.
The Labor Department data show there were fewer job openings in May than there were in April, but considering Aprils number of job openings was a record 6.84 million, the 6.64 million jobs available in May still indicates a strong economy, Bloomberg reported.
These numbers come as unemployment rates remain very low, reaching 4 percent nationwide in June.
Though President Trump frequently takes credit for the booming U.S. economy, he has alarmed economists in recent months with his aggressive trade policies that target Canada, China and the European Union.
My daughter quit her high stress job to go to school to become a hair dresser so she could have less stress and start having kids. Actually, I see them as grandkids.
And my other daughter did the same, except she just quit period. They are both in their early to mid 30’s and even they joke about that scene in My Cousin Vinny. :)
Yep. American workers have options. And that is a good thing.
I’m looking myself. Don’t tell my boss.

Ah yes, always the parting shot.
Here in California most employees are “at will employees.” That means there is no contract and employers can fire employees at the drop of a hat. Now employers are finding out that “at will” employment works both ways. The employee can accept a better job and leave at any time WITHOUT TRAINING A REPLACEMENT.
“Better opportunities”?
I thought the only way to get a better opportunity was for the State to force a $15.00 minimum wage.
Cause its unfair that working 20 hours a week at Jack in the Box won’t pay the rent on a 2 bedroom apartment, right?

Your boss FReeps too. He wants to see you in his office at 3:00 today.
No surprise that it extends into G Bush's presidency. The stage was being set almost immediately after Ronald Reagan left office.
VERY GOOD thing for American workers. We just need the labor participation rate to climb back up.
Just updated the resume today as well.
Odd headline. Seems to me this record number of Americans would be smarter than to quit first, then seek another job.
Also, in one of the few things they have ever gotten right, California also banned the use of noncompete agreements in employment.
Now you can leave your job and go to work for a competitor without fear that your former employer is going to tie you up on court for the next thirteen years.
It’s an idea that needs to spread.
I’m seeing a big uptick in stuff from Monster, Zip-recruiter, and some other boards I’m somehow signed up on.
I sent my CV to a couple just to see.
Yep. Out of 90 million not working, surely there are 3 or 4 million
still capable of doing some type of job.
Labor participation rate is starting to rise again for the first time since before Obama when it suddenly declined 4%.
During the Great Recession there would be next to no job openings. As a contractor my contract was up about two months ago so a month before my contract ended, I started looking. I got 5 offers by the time that one month til the end of my contract came. My income has gone up 20% in the last year. The difference between now and YEARS of the Obama economy is breathtaking.
I turned in my papers just this week. It is so liberating!
Because THERE ARE other opportunities. Thank you, DJT.
Or where we are in central Florida ... workers quit their jobs cause they cant live on PART-TIME work, with NO benefits.
