Exalted Righteousness, Tawdry Methods Lead to Walk Away
Am Thinker ^ | July 7. 2018 | Clarice Feldman

Victor Davis Hanson, writing in American Greatness, surveys how history’s bad ideas inspire the “progressives.” He focuses on the plans for court packing, the resegregation of students in universities, the growing movements to censor speech, restaurants’ decision to refuse service to those whose views they disagree with and local governments’ nullification of laws (sanctuary cities).

The common themes in all these schemes are innate to progressivism. To survive and spread, exalted righteousness always excuses tawdry methods, given the supposed ignorance and gullibility of the unenlightened.

Short-term expediency is well worth the goal of regaining power. Any smell from low tactics later can be perfumed away -- once power is back in the correct hands.

Unfortunately for them, it seems not to be working so well this time. The growing #WalkAway movement, in which lifelong Democrats publicly announce they are walking away from the party, shows they supposed wrong about “the ignorance and gullibility of the unenlightened.”

Sure, lots of people remain fooled but as the economy soars and unemployment drops to its lowest level since 1973,  millennials, blacks (especially black women, the bedrock of the Democratic base today) and Hispanics seem to have caught on that the party that eschews capitalism in order to make them dependent on government largesse may not be the party to stick to. Millennials are peeling away from the party.

Forgive me for being skeptical but I think the proof will be in the pudding come November. We will see if these #walkaway types are actually a force or just a few fringe discontented.

I hope this is true, but I remain skeptical. Only the votes tell the story. Please note, that an open race klan, socialist, tyrant just one a seat in NY. The Cortez bitch won by popular, although a low turnout, vote. This is a message I pay most attention to.

There is tremendous inertia and delay and “flywheel effect” in public opinion and politics. Months worth.

It may be already too late for the fabled (and fantasized) “Giant Blue Wave” to happen now. Trump is simply making too much Plain Common Sense to any non-psychotic political thinkers.

The true nutz will never sway —they’d elect Hillary in a heartbeat, even now, and even after all the Krappe has oozed out and gotten published widely.

Nope. I think the Dems have cooked their own goose with all the insanity.

Let’s hope I’m right.

I’ve watched quite a few of the #WalkAway videos. It will certainly be hard to measure the impact, but I will say that if you want to really understand the red hot anger from the Dems about the DNC leaks, watch those videos.

In truth, Bernie probably had close to majority support in the party, certainly a majority of those who were actually paying any attention, and they all watched him get mugged in broad daylight. Then right in the middle of the convention, with everyone’s focus on it, irrefutable proof was revealed documenting the robbery. Yet, the Party and their media lackeys swept it all under the rug. I think that just sort of “broke the spell” for a lot of people, and yes, some of them probably ended up even further to the left, but you have to realize that most Americans are not ideological like we are here at Free Republic. If they’re sitting in their living room seething about the political establishment and fake news rigging an election, and they see Donald Trump on the screen loudly condemning the political establishment and fake news for rigging an election . . . well, let’s just say their ears were open as never before for the rest of the right’s message. Some jumped on board, and never looked back.

Many did not, but then when Trump won, against all odds and expectations, now you add to the above the dynamic that people tend to just jump on the winning bandwagon.

We’ll see what happens in November, but if I had to bet, unless there’s are some major negative intervening events, there’s no blue wave coming. They’ll be extremely lucky if they squeak out a House win.

I agree with the others, we won't really know until the November elections give the "experts" a chance to reveal themselves while trying to cover their tracks. It's one of the more amusing aspects of American politics.

But a lot of us have been commenting on the drastic leftward careen of the Democrats for some time. One of the many erroneous assumptions of identity politics is that once you've built a coalition of the Oppressed you don't really need what is generally described as the moderate middle. This is fine if you're organizing a campus demonstration but it isn't working in national politics, and doubling down on it only makes it worse.

It isn't only Republicans or even conservatives who are angry at the media, at the lies, at the hatred and racism and exclusionary virtue-signaling, because it isn't only the Republicans or conservatives who have been made the victims. The Deplorables turned out to have a very large basket, and it's filling rapidly. Time will tell if that will have an effect in November but I wouldn't bet against it at this point.

Yep. I doubt that any of them would vote republican. The best we can hope for is that they stay home.

I hear you about the communist. However, this is NYC we are talking about. Sorry, but those people are bat-crap crazy, not at all an indication of the nation. They are like a pimple on the buttocks of America.

I’m dubious on this #walkaway, too, and waiting for November to see. They may be walking away, but I don’t know if they’re walking in our direction.

They may be walking away, but I don’t know if they’re walking in our direction.

I officially walked away from the Democrat party sometime in the mid nineties, but I had been a more or less disillusioned voter since the Carter years. I wasn't a reliable voter at all, and stayed home during more than one presidential election.

During the Reagan years, I gave the man sincere props for turning the economy around, and for bringing back a sense of pride to Americans of all stripes. When he succeeded in ending the Cold War, I applauded him.

Still, I wasn't ready to vote for any Republican. It wasn't until I was accidentally exposed to evil right wing talk radio in 1998, that I finally woke completely from my left liberal programming. I registered Republican to vote for GWB in 2000, and never looked back.

I don't think most walkaways today, will wander the wilderness as long as I did, but I don't expect to see them voting Republican this year, either. Maybe by 2020. We'll see.
