A doctor who has lived in Verona for 20 years intends to open an Islamic Center at the site of the former Congregation Beth Ahm synagogue at 56 Grove Avenue.
Dr. Montaser Awad built a career as a specialist in internal medicine and is now a professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. But he believes it is also his duty to create a compelling place of worship for his fellow Muslims and to build bridges between Islam and the community he has come to love. I am 63 years old, Dr. Awad says. I have a position and I have money. I have to spend the remainder of my life helping people.
There is too much misunderstanding of Islam here in America, he adds. I have to do something active to change this point of view. I have to give a good example to my community. Dr. Awad had been looking for a location an Islamic Center for more than two years.
Dr. Awad is currently in contract on the property and hopes to open Ebadul Rahman Islamic Center in early May, in time for the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. He has retained Hatem Farid, one of the most respected reciters in the Muslim religion and the leader of a mosque Alexandria, Egypt, to be the centers religious leader, or imam. Dr. Awad is a native of Egypt and was a professor at the University of Alexandria before emigrating to the United States.

I drove past this place this morning on the way to my own synagogue. I drive past it when I pick up my granddaughters and take them to synagogue with me. So I drive past this place pretty often. I've often wondered about it as there never seemed to be any activity there on Saturday morning. Today I saw a sign on the place that it was now the Verona Islamic Center (or something like that).
I just Googled and found this (now old) article, but I also found other articles. It seems the town had agreed to purchase the site. There was talk of housing their rescue squad there, or maybe something else. I think there was even an agreement to purchase.
But then some @$$hole apparently started a successful petition drive against the purchase. (I wonder how he and/or his signers feels now!!)
Apparently the Muslims purchased the place, and they were sort of grandfathered in as town laws said as long as the place continued to be used as a religious institution, they were In Like Flint.
This place is located less than ten miles away from me. I'm not happy about it.

“I have to give a good example to my community.
Not to America. Not to his state. Not to his town. Not to the filthy infidels.
Itll be a community arts center

I wonder if the mosque will display an American flag inside the way the synagogue did.
It is the ultimate goal of Islam to turn all synagogues and Christian churches into mosques.
If it burns to the ground, would that act be anti-Semitic or anti-Islam?
CAUTION:Goat Crossing next 2 miles.
Misunderstanding? As President Trump correctly pointed out during the campaign as people were jumping 100 stories to their deaths in Lower Manhattan moslems in the US,and elsewhere, were filmed cheering wildly!
Where are you in NJ? Our kids are down in Ewing Twp and I believe they are close to Rutgers. Dang. And a mosque - that is truly stomach-turning.
I'm in North Caldwell, which does share a border with Verona, but about five miles from me. (My grandkids live in Montclair.)

The cancer spreads.
The Bill of Rights applies to all Americans, including Muslims. I have no problem with this.
We are going to have to do something about this religious based political system which is focusing on destroying Christianity and the United States as we know it.
“There is too much misunderstanding of Islam here in America...
No sir, we understand you quite well and that’s what worries us.
Oh and Verona, just wait until the call to prayer begins at 5 am. Everybody up!
+1
[There is too much misunderstanding of Islam here in America, he adds]
Ha. There is far too LITTLE understanding of islam in America.
I wonder if the new Imam is Wahahbi or MB? Hows he getting a work visa?
Is that poor man burned? I zoomed in but I cannot tell.
Boy do I remember that day well. I filled up my SUV on the way into my client because I knew there’d be long lines after work. And there were.
ping to you guys as well
