Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) warned Republicans against continuing their "assault" against Robert Mueller, writing in an op-ed Friday that the GOP must let Mueller continue his investigation.
In an opinion piece for The Washington Post, the former Tennessee Republican urged Republicans to fight for the "rule of law," even if it meant going up against the Trump administration.
"I am also a Republican because I believe in the rule of law. Republicans must fight for that principle today even if it means pushing back against a Republican administration," Frist wrote.
"It isnt easy to tell a president of your own party that he is wrong. But the assault on Muellers investigation does not help the president or his party," he added. "[But] the president must remember that only Muellers exoneration can lift the cloud hanging over the White House."
Frist went on to argue that claims of "runaway legal authority," such as those made by former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort in an attempt to have the charges against him dismissed, do not hold up when compared to Mueller's record.
"I have worried over the years about runaway legal authority, and Ive battled against activist judges. I dont worry about Robert Mueller," he said.
"And his investigation is getting results: By any objective standard, he has moved swiftly, obtaining 23 indictments and five guilty pleas in just more than a year."
Trump has frequently characterized Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt," and has accused the special counsel of going beyond the original scope of the investigation to pursue charges not related to alleged Russian election interference.
Republicans have frequently pointed to text messages sent by former members of Mueller's probe as evidence of pervasive anti-Trump bias that they say tainted the investigation from the start.
Believes in the rule of law? Then why are they not clamoring for Hillary Clinton to be in jail? Why?
I have ZERO respect for the Republican party.
Frist removed the cancer of Sasser from this state. He was fine as a backbencher Senator, but was profoundly underqualified as a Senate leader. Dingy Harry made Frist his bitch as Majority Leader, and it showed (and we promptly lost the Senate).
Remember Frist was going to run for Governor in 2010 ? So we put out the word that he was incompetent, and that was that (alas, we got Haslam instead, probably worse). I see Frist recently went full retard in supporting that massive (and thankfully defeated) $20 billion boondoggle on Nashville transit supported by the creepy cemetery fornicating with a cop twat Mayor Barry. He’s about as out-of-touch now as they come.
Maybe they were just never the party we thought they were?
Does the rule of law include supporting illegal investigations conducted under extreme prejudice? Is Frist a jerk?
Swell.
Another George Will.
With friends like these who needs enemas?
And he says what about Hillary and the sham of that investigation?
Maybe you ought to aim Mueller toward Clinton, Obama, and their minions if you really believe in “rule of law”...
Otherwise STFU....
Mueller says he can tie Manafort’s case to Trump by saying the bank employee that gave him a six million dollar loan wanted to work in Trump’s campaign. The articles don’t make it clear if he was given a spot in the campaign though.
Mueller’s case against Concord is suppose to show that Russians used advertising to influence the election.
—Don’t know enough about Manafort’s case to make an opinion on if he can beat the charge, but Concord has a good chance of it.
Frist...You have just tied AL Gore for the biggest embarrassment to the state of Tennessee....
So, the “rule of law” in the form of Robert Meuller must be above criticism? Why is Meuller to be treated better than King George? Frist, who was never a compelling public figure, has plainly gone soft-headed in retirement.
There is no “Rule of Law”
There is:
“Right to confront your accuser”
“Right to be represented by council”
Both have been denied by Mueller by his refusal to allow anyone to know his sources and his personal raid on Trump’s lawyer.
Frisk would know this if he knew anything about the law.
The one positive thing I can say for McTurtle is he knows the Senate manual of procedure backwards and forwards and nothing gets done he doesn't want done. He absolutely stonewalled BHO’s legislative agenda after the Gopers got the Senate back. The Turtle is establishment through and through but like his predecessor Byrd he knows his words and music..
Bump!
Those massive paybacks Trump style - whether they be good, bad, mixed, or otherwise do seem to be quite mythical. I cant recall seeiing any such things
Certainly hes a total failure in politics. Thats for sure As for his doctoring, Ive no idea
For decades upon decade the ‘elected class’ in our society has proven their incompetence over and over. Finally having a non-politician outsider running things has demonstrated how untalented and ill-equipped most of these people have been. I have zero doubt that random people with no political experience would do a much, much better job than the vast majority of those who wind up in elected office.
Oh, look - a Uniparty team player.
These guys think that the Deplorable peasants are just going to sit on their hands while The Swamp removes President Trump...
Womp womp
Thanks for the mention.
You slimy worms come for President Trump and it's ON like Donkey Kong, b*tchez.
