When the conversation turned to the question of whether Nancy Pelosi should be the next speaker of the House, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proposed an alternative.
Instead of maintaining the status quo in the House Democratic Caucus, the most talked-about Democratic congressional nominee of 2018 told a reporter, “I’d like to see new leadership, but I don’t even know what our options are. I mean, is Barbara Lee running? Call me when she does!”
That was a knowing response from a savvy Democrat, who became the face of a progressive surge within the Democratic Party after her June 26 primary defeat of Congressman Joe Crowley, the party’s fourth-highest-ranking leader in the House. Crowley was widely seen as a contender to replace House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and in the event of a Democratic takeover of the chamber, the speakership.

The next Minority Leader of the House will be a Democrat. He or she will reflect the temperament, agenda, and political philosophy of the New Democrat Party. This will doom them. The states that were turned red by Donald Trump will permanently move into the Red electoral column. Others will join them. The only way to avoid that disaster is for the Democrats to repeat what they did in Virginia with Texas and Arizona. That’s why they are so fanatic about open borders and voter registration of illegal immigrants.
A Lee proposed the initial USA (Richard Henry Lee); Another Lee, Barbara Lee, could lead the ‘Rats to end it. These ‘Rats are way out there, how far we’ve fallen.

Unfortunately for John Nichols (and the entire crew at the Nation Magazine for that matter), the economic basis for a New Deal and a War on Poverty does not exist. Hoping that a section of the bourgeoisie will respond to the dulcet tones of Katrina Vanden Heuvel on MSNBC is utopianism of the highest order. Right now the Democrats are playing soft cop to the Republican Party’s hard cop. The Republicans demand that the social legislation that came out of the New Deal be 100 percent repealed. Meanwhile, the Democrats provide a spineless opposition. Vote for us and only 50 percent will be dismantled and all the while The Nation will be providing arguments about why it is necessary to vote Democrat.
