assaulting someone for their political speech should be a civil rights crime.

Hate crimes by their definition are very hard to prove because you have to actually prove the motivation of the perp.

Robbery, assault, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault have very cut and dried definitions that are easy to prove for overworked prosecutors.

But it lets TV hosts pound their table...

If this is the guy wearing MAGA hat then the assault was an attack on his freedom of political speech. The assailant grabbed the hat.
