Medical Schools Rip Trump Move Against Race Consideration At Universities
Forbes ^ | July 4, 2018 | Bruce Japsen

The lobby for hundreds of medical schools and teaching hospitals Wednesday said it was “deeply concerned” that the Trump administration was rescinding guidance on consideration of race in university admissions.

The 4th of July announcement by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) comes after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded 24 Obama-era guidance documents on affirmative action the Trump justice department said were “unnecessary, outdated, inconsistent with existing law or otherwise improper.” A joint letter from the Justice Department and the Department of Education said the Obama administration advocated policy and "positions beyond the requirements of the Constitution,” the New York Times reported.

But the AAMC said the Trump administration’s move “signals opposition to the consideration of race as one of many individualized factors in higher education admissions, despite the fact that the Supreme Court has upheld this practice for 40 years, and as recently as 2016.”

“Medical student diversity is necessary to prepare physicians to provide care to an increasingly diverse population and to address significant health disparities,” AAMC President and CEO Dr. Darrell Kirch said.

Medical schools and residency programs in teaching hospitals said the Trump administration’s move flies in the face of efforts to produce “more engaged” students and “higher-performing” doctors. The AAMC represents more than 150 U.S. medical schools and nearly 400 academic medical centers and teaching health systems.

“To prepare a physician workforce for these challenges, many medical schools have determined that it is necessary to include the consideration of race and ethnicity, along with many other factors, in the admissions process,” Kirch said. “Individualized, holistic review of each applicant—carried out under long-standing Supreme Court precedent—leads to a more engaged student body and to higher-performing students."

I don’t want any Affirmative Action doctor even taking my pulse, much less TRYING to treat me.

Slavery was legal for more than 40 years but it was never right, nor are race-base admissions policies.

Obama isn’t qualified to be a medical patient.

I’ll stop there.

Some large orchestras maintain a partitioned selection process where the performer meets the committee only if hired.

“Individualized, holistic review of each applicant—carried out under long-standing Supreme Court precedent—leads to a more engaged student body and to higher-performing students."

Not really. It lowers standards and retards the progress of innovation and advancement in medical care. The only criteria should be merit. Others prior to 40 years ago have had to fight harder and have deserved their admission, such as Dr. Mildren Jefferson, the first black woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School, whose life is soon to be depicted in a movie:

She is probably a good person but preferences at Harvard have been going on a lot longer than 40 years.

My Uncle was an Air Force Recruiter during the 50s. He told me that they had a standing offer of a scholarship for any Black recruit who scored above a certain level.

I can’t recall the score needed but it wasn’t extremely high.

I agree with you on Sowell. Also Walter Williams. Both are among the best writers and thinkers period.

Curious: how does that work? Do they only listen to audio recordings of the candidates?

Oh, wait, you said partitioned. I was thinking of computer partitions on the hard drive. You meant they play behind a screen?

But she actually did the work and graduated. Surely not all of her 28 honorary degrees awarde afterward were bogus.

FWIW, medical mistakes are the #3 cause of death every year in the US, with over 400,000 fatalities. Medical mistakes are a preventable cause of death.

Medical colleges should be ONLY about preparing the best candidates to be excellent physicians, without any consideration for race, sex or gendering issues. After doctor error becomes less deadly, we can start to consider feel-good medical policies.

It’s funny how EVERYTHING Obama instituted is seen as untouchable...even when it’s merely going back to the way it was for decades.

Have you seen the movie Hidden Figures? It was about black female mathematicians who actually did some of the critical work on the John Glenn space flight, yet were kept segregated from the rest of the team. Two of them in particular had so much talent that it was eventually recognized and they were promoted and integrated into the main work space with the white male engineers.

My point being, outstanding black persons, and of all races, do certainly exist and have excelled in various fields before all the AffAction began. It is wrong to misjudge capable people due to skin color; by the same token, it does no favors to the group in the long run to lower standards for them and lie to them about how they are actually doing in relation to white peers. It's not all about background, culture, etc. Sometimes it's just about intelligence, as most European whites who have had to struggle when competing academically against Jews and East Asians can tell you.

One of the other initiatives Trump and Sessions are doing is the DOJ is suing Harvard because they have (unfairly, DOJ says) purposely limited the number of East Asian admissions because they score so high.

AMEN...

Why should anyone want a person that is marginally qualified to diagnose them & recommend the correct course of medication, etc?

I don’t even want such for my horses & dogs....

Certainly not for AMERICANS.

Same for my CPA or legal advisor......I don’t need to spend time & MONEY trying to correct what a marginally qualified CPA or lawyer told me to do on my financial records.
