If you click through to the underlying article, you find an important element missing from the Fox write-up:

Connecticut law requires Sumpter to retreat from the beating he was given at the Dunkin’ Donuts where he worked. After being assaulted inside the coffee shop, Sumpter ran outside and stabbed one of the men.

I'd like to know more about this case because, notwithstanding the bolded fact, prison sounds like overkill.

It sounds like they assaulted him, left, he chased them outside, and stabbed one. Even under Stand Your Ground, he would have been in trouble.

Agreed, prison sounds a bit over the top. Fact is, though if he chased after the assailants once they dis-engaged, then stabbed one of the them, that's a no-no, even in a "stand your ground" state.
