Britain could team up with Sweden to build a new fighter jet after being snubbed by France and Germany.

British officials have held preliminary talks with the Swedes and the Ministry of Defence is next week expected to outline plans to start developing a warplane to replace the Typhoon.

Sweden, which is in the EU, has shown interest in collaborating and would be a natural partner through its defence manufacturer Saab, according to the Financial Times.

Sources stressed that the UK has spoken to several countries about the project. Japan and South Korea are also potential partners.

France and Germany shocked British defence firms last July when they announced plans to develop a new European fighter jet without the UK.

British officials are keen to ensure the RAF has the aircraft it needs and that manufacturers retains the skills and capability to make fighter jets.

Currently the UK is working with the US to build the F-35 fighter and with Germany, Italy and Spain on the Eurofighter Typhoon.

This seems some Daily Mail nonsense.

Britain is the only Level 1 F-35 partner and Typhoon needs to be replaced in coming few years while developing a new plane takes about 25. Should Britain start a project now it won’t certainly be to replace their Typhoons.

Britain is looking a gift horse in the mouth. Let France and Germany absorb the development cost overruns, and when the aircraft is finally sorted out in 15 years, then place your orders.

I looked it up now and it was as I thought. The French-German project is for the 6th generation fighter. Currently the only functional 5th generation fighter - F-35 - is planned to be in service until 2070 and Britain is Level 1 (the highest) partner there. Both France and Germany are not partners.

At the risk of sounding sexist pig - this is an article by a girl and her job title is “city correspondent”. It is not surprising she gets everything wrong.

F-22 won’t be available for Britain or anyone other than the USA. There won’t be any new ones built any more. For British procurement it might as well not exist.
