Two doctors volunteer to STAY with children trapped in Thai cave for FOUR MONTHS (trunc)

Two doctors have volunteered to stay with children trapped in a Thai cave for four months if floodwaters cut them off and make rescue attempts impossible, it has emerged.

A football coach and 12 'rake thin' young players remain trapped in the Thamg Luang cave network in the country's north as experts desperately try to come up with a plan to rescue them.

There are fears fresh rainfall over the next few days could add to flooding in the caves - meaning the boys, who cannot swim, may have to wait until the end of monsoon season in October before they can be brought to safety.

If that does happen, two of Thailand's Navy doctors have already volunteered to stay in the underground chamber for as long as it takes in what is being described as a 'huge sacrifice'.

British volunteer divers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton were among those who struggled through narrow passages and murky waters to search for the boys, who were found starving but unhurt on an elevated rock on Monday.

A first meal of rice and pork - packaged up in sealed portions - is being prepared for the youngsters, who have already been given energy gels and paracetamol. Seal commander Rear Adm Arpakorn Yookongkaew said a team of seven, including medics, are with the boys and looking after them after an underground headquarters was set up - stocked with diving equipment, food and medical supplies.

THE Copiapó mining accident, known globally as the Chilean mining accident, initially began on August 5, 2010, with a cave-in at the San José copper–gold mine in northern Chile.
The accident saw 33 miners trapped 2,300ft underground for 69 days as the world waited to hear of their fate. Here’s more on what happened.

The trapped miners, most of whom were Roman Catholic, asked for religious items, including Bibles, crucifixes, rosaries, and statues of the Virgin Mary and other saints to be sent down to them.
Rosaries sent by Pope Benedict XVI were also sent to the men.

It’s child abuse not to teach children to swim at a very early age.

I bet they never thought of that! You should contact them immediately, since you are a ten-second expert!

you get disoriented quickly

Run a rope through the passage. All they'd have to do is hold onto it.

NBC just said only 4 rescuers can be where the boys are because there is little air. Seems like they better get them out immediately before more rains fill up the cave even more reducing even more what oxygen they have.

The dive route is 2.5 miles and some places they’d have to take off their tanks off their backs but they’d still have their mouth pieces. Iphones or some such are being sent down so they can talk to their parents. Give them ear buds on the dive so they can hear their family and stay a bit more calm.

“WOW. I’d never have the guts to volunteer for something like that.”

No, you would. If you’re posting here and have that opportunity to help bring these kids out healthy. I have NO DOUBT you would do that. We’re not Democrat Underground here.

But I understand, from a distance, it’s hard to image the sacrifice of these people - to blow off everything in their ‘normal’ lives of seeing patients and making a decent living, in order to live with a bunch of kids you never met. But many of us, if not most, if in that position, would do the same.

Swimming ability really has little to do with it. It's not like they are going to dog-paddle or do the breast-stroke out of there.

I'm an expert swimmer and I can stay afloat almost indefinitely. But scuba diving creeps the hell out of me. Never could do it. I would rather sit in a dark cave for four months than to strap on a diving suit and navigate underwater passages, knowing that if I had a problem, I could not surface.

And they’re skinny. It was full grown men who had to take off their tanks toward the opening. With these boys being skinny, they may not have to. Plus, the tight section is at the end of the dive so that won’t be as scary. Seems it’d be more scary to stay down there four months.

Exactly, just move them out in the series of short dives.

Seems workable.

4 months is BS. Get Trump and the army corps of engineers on it.

'If something goes wrong 10 kilometres down an underwater tunnel, you usually have until your air runs out to find a solution or make your peace.'

Except it's way shorter than 10 kilometers and they will have a guide rope and several areas where they can float and relax. It's not like they're exploring the cave by themselves and risking getting lost.

If this was your child, what would you choose?

First, I loved my kids enough to teach them to swim when they were wee little. Second, I didn't raise snowflakes. Third, doubt I'd have to choose as they'd have already decided for themselves to strap on a tank and swim out asap.

Or a box of survival suits and face hugging air supply.

I must not understand the situation, because them staying until October seems like giving up.

Sounds like that Twilight Zone episode where the two time traveling gold stealers awake in the desert with only one canteen.

Leave the damned box, go get that in October.

LMAO

The wise choice would be to wait until the water subsides ...

Watching a video at the link, diver says the only map they had was 30 years old map made by French spelunkers which been annotated by some British spelunkers.

From the article “ That journey takes a healthy - and skilled - Navy SEAL diver about six hours.”
