Since President Trump’s election, journalists, political scientists and others from across the United States and around the world have visited our little southern Ohio town, population 6,600, to study the natives. Naturally, patronizing local eateries at breakfast or lunchtime is usually part of their itinerary.
Some have told me later that, during their interviews, they went out of their way to identify themselves as liberals who have little use for our president. To their credit, they wanted to be honest about who they were and what they were doing. They were sometimes treated with a degree of skepticism, but without fail, they say that people were polite and willing to talk to them — not to mention serve them breakfast or lunch.
We contrast this, of course, with the recent episodes involving Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, both of whom were essentially evicted from restaurants — Nielsen heckled away by customers, Sanders asked by the restaurant owner to leave — for the crime of Trump association, similar to a misdemeanor but quickly approaching felony status.

Dear Red Hen: Democracy isn’t totalitarian fascism, as your restaurant practices.
Democracy requires differences of opinion and toleration of those opinions.
Any restaurant owner should be able to ask anyone to leave, for any reason.
It is a basic First Amendment right, known as freedom of association.
It has been trampled on for nearly 50 years.
Um, democracy requires that everything gets voted on and the majority rules, period, with no overturns by judges.
Um, America is not a democracy, it’s a republic.
Um, the stupid, it burns at The Red Hen.
They (the “natives”) hadn’t ought to get too complacent about any show of fairness from the left. Because at any time, one of the lefty reporters will write another story about ignorant deplorables. Count on it.
I agree with that, actually. I just want the left to be rightly excoriated for their hypocrisy and projection.
The overturns by judges doesn't come from being a republic. It comes from having a limited government with defined powers in a written constitution. A democracy could also be limited and have votes overturned by judges. A republic can have unlimited powers that are never questioned.
What was the WaPo’s first clue!
Trump Country has been tolerating Sodomites, male-bashing, white-bashing, Christian-bashing, America-bashing, public immorality, socialistic indoctrination of our children and a general hatred of conservatives for a lonnnnnnnnnnnng time.
I think most of us here are done with tolerating the intolerable. I am.

I had a Liberal Relative (through Marriage) upset as he could be when I said the Civil Rights Act should have only applied to Governmental Entities.
The idea that a Law was passed (good intentions do not necessarily make good Law) that attacked my Freedom of Assembly Rights as an American Citizen is completely and utterly Unconstitutional.
The average Citizen of this Country has no concept of what true Freedom means. Things will have to get very bad before they do.

And, they should be accountable for the reaction to their choices. All is going very American for the Red Hen.
Now, I would like to see that very same principle practiced equally across all political stripes. It's legal to discriminate. Right? I mean, no shoes, no shirt, disagreeable politics, objectionable morals, religious beliefs, sexual preferences, tattoos, dress code, language, ethnicity, physique.... Business owners should be motivated by profit, morals and civility, not by regulations. If they choose to be exclusive, let the market dictate their success.
Have at that.
That's why I don't favor comments like "Screw the bas..." etc. It shows the best in conservatism being swapped out for what's worst on the other side.
You don’t need a condescending Harvard study to prove this. We all know its true.
Its why I left the “big city” to live in a distant country/suburb. Neighbors help each other, and don’t ask about politics. Its how normal people live.

In the end, running customers off in such a blatant manner is asking for trouble, especially at a customer-oriented place like a restaurant.

Democracy is simply the majority of the voters, and the government is created or put in place by that majority...
So if the government is “unprincipled”, what does that say about the majority of the voters?
And then who gets to decide what is principled? You, or the majority?
