Not so sure that he knew. I have been associated before with Senate and Member offices in DC, and well-known lobbying firms. Not everyone knows everything or at least not all the details. People get briefed all the time but things change so much it’s not possible to know everything real-time.
The military though, is a different story. They better know everything to the nth degree.
It’s funny, I railed against Sessions when he signed the secret Iran deal back in 2015. I got blasted by a Freeper close to then TX AG Abbott now Governor who said Sessions was a great patriot. I backed down and said Ok, out of respect I will take that Sessions is more than I knew.
That same person went full bore against Sessions when he recused.
Now I am often pitifully trying to find something good to say about Jeff.

He had access to a wide range of high level intrigue and data, that even the deep state Ministry of Propaganda has little to no clue of.
Sessions, like all US Senators, was chest deep in the muck and mire of the Swamp, and knows all too well where the bodies are buried.
His fellow scum sucking denizens know that he knows, and have ample evidence of those facts, which they would be only too happy to divulge, should Sleepy ever step out of line.
The only thing that's confusing you, is the incessant drumbeat of the Sessions supporters, who are trying to convince you that your eyes are lying.
