What kind of lubricant do you use there? 1W 5?

Amsoil has had 0W-30 for around 15 years.

And several others such as 0W-20, etc., for quite a few years.

BTW, here in CA, crazy America, the powers that be really are banning plastic grocery bags and plastic straws. We are holding the line at plastic wrap so far.

“We are holding the line at plastic wrap so far.”

Well sure - what are the folks in Hollywood supposed to use otherwise for their kinky bondage sex? (Earlier FR thread today).

At the supermarket nearest here, there is one cashier who still asks if I want paper or plastic. I always go for paper. It holds the food better and I can use it in my charcoal starter chimney.

I’ve heard of scientists who man the stations down there during the winter having a party and initiating the newbies to the 300 club. They jury rig the thermostat on their saunas to not trip off and then stand in there naked for just as long as they possible can stand it without feinting.

Open both doors and in three steps they are outside at an insane cold temperature, all in less than 2 seconds.

They say its pretty neat to feel a 300 degree change in temperature from a wet humid steam bath to a frigid, dry windy air almost instantaneously.

If I were there I would so do that too.

I think all the personnel at the US South Pole station have to pass a very rigorous physical exam, given the limited medical facilities and tremendous cost of evacuation.

If you do the sauna to outside thing, my guess is you don't need another cardiac stress test for 10 years.

Cryostat. Pulled vacuum on Helium dewar and pulled liquid helium into the cryostat. Had to do a dip test on some 35 year old RTDs used on the old shuttle tanks/engines. Being reused on SLS flight, I think.

We had a lexan cover on the top of the cryostat and could view the helium as it flowed into the bottom of the cryostat. Once we removed the vacuum it fogged quickly as it began evaporating. Dipped the RTDs to get the bottom of the Temperature scale.

We use the same cryostat with a different lid and pressure lines built in to calibrate pressure transducers at cryo temps. Fun stuff.

In all things related to climate science, consensus is important.

“Fun stuff.”

Used cryo pumps in semiconductor manufacturing. Clean deep vacuum for Al, Ti-W, or Pt sputtering on to the semiconductor substrates.

The most recent warning I have heard about is that droughts will be on the rise. Although thone are likely inevitable and we will need to adapt our water use and sources.

At -78.5°C the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will deposit as carbon dioxide "snow".

Funny. My first thought was to look up the temp of dry ice. According to Google, dry ice is -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit, so it seems like they might well have some there.

Excellent car idling there. When ever someone complains about my car idling, I explain that I am feeding trees. I explain just where the oxygen we breathe originates.

I have a sign in my office ‘Large Carbon Footprints Make for Happy Trees.’
