The Pentagon is analyzing the cost and impact of a large-scale withdrawal or transfer of American troops stationed in Germany, amid growing tensions between President Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to people familiar with the work.
The effort follows Trumps expression of interest in removing the troops, made during a meeting earlier this year with White House and military aides, U.S. officials said. Trump was said to have been taken aback by the size of the U.S. presence, which includes about 35,000 active-duty troops, and complained that other countries were not contributing fairly to joint security or paying enough to NATO.
Word of the assessment has alarmed European officials, who are scrambling to determine whether Trump actually intends to reposition U.S. forces or whether it is merely a negotiating tactic ahead of a NATO summit in Brussels, where Trump is again likely to criticize U.S. allies for what he deems insufficient defense spending.

Trump understands “keep your friends close, your enemies even closer!”
The other thing I love about President Trump is he’s killing time by working it to death! I’ll bet he has a huge cadre of “$hit disturbers” looking in every nook and cranny of government to find $hit to get rid of.
Yup. It isnt as much the physical troops as it is the NATO pledge to assist in a European war. Our willingness to defend them has allowed EU countries to redirect otherwise defense dollars toward social spending. So American taxpayers are footing the bill for lavish EU policies that make our crazy leftists leer in jealousy
Left to themselves, over the past couple hundred years, they have shown a definite tendency to not play well with their neighbors.
So what? Let the French defend the French from the Germans. Europe is soaked with an ocean of American blood and uncountable amounts of American treasure.
And all weve gotten in return is their contempt.
Western Europe is dying. And its a suicide.

I believe the idea, generally stated, is that when a fight develops (it will, sooner or later), we should be positioned to fight as far away from “here” as possible, and be in the best possible position to “move” / fight, possible. Now, this does not say who the fight would necessarily be against. Others state the Germans (for example) have been emasculated. But, what about any of several Euro nations if Muslims gain even partial power?
Some FReepers (this is not pointed at you) show startlingly little ability to think outside the box and / or into the future, say, 20-50 years..

As I stated in my post, it isn’t just about our own self-defense, or even the continuing defense of our European “alies!” We should have a defense posture that keeps any new wars off of our homeland, but at the same time the financial considerations should be factored in. We seemingly, have been all to willing to “keep chipping in” when the Europeans don’t step up to their obligations. So it’s like the tariff gambit. The Tariffs are simply one of the “sticks” to be employed to rectify the fifty years or more of inequitable trade relationships. So too is the threat to move our forces out of Germany, and maybe other European countries as well if they don’t offer any equity. We can survive without troops in Europe better now, thanks to advanced weapon systems, but out boots on the ground offer an immediate deterrent to hostile action on that continent, and the Krauts know it. I just imagine all the back channel “discussions” are going on right now amid the
“fake bluster.” The Europeans are just finding out that unlike virtually all our past Presidents, this on won’t be rolled.
Yes, and thank God he does...
Oh please God let this happen. One of my wildest dreams is for America to withdraw its troops from Eurabia.
Send them to Poland and Hungary to stave off Germany and France’s aggression against them.
I recommend Haiti.
