If progressives hate Donald Trump so much, why are they trying so hard to get him re-elected?
They may believe, with justification, that Donald Trump is vulgar and mean-spirited. They may think he acts more like a bully in middle school than a president. They may be convinced, based on the evidence before them, that he's impulsive and dishonest.
But he's not a Nazi, no matter how many times they say he is. And he's not Adolf Hitler, despite what their fevered imagination keeps telling them.
Now we have not some anonymous leftist at a street rally but a former head of the CIA taking to Twitter to tell us that, "Other governments have separated mothers and children," referring to the president's border policy (at the time). And just in case you didn't get the connection to the Nazis, Michael Hayden - who led the CIA under the presidency of George W. Bush - attached a picture of railroad tracks leading into the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.
Then, when he got hammered for his shameful comparison, he issued the standard non-apology apology: "If I [went too far] by comparing it to Birkenau, I apologize to anyone who may have felt offended."
And if we needed any proof that there is such a thing as Trump Derangement Syndrome just tune in to "Morning Joe" on MSNBC any day of the week. Here's what Joe Scarborough had to say about the separation of children from their parents on the border: "Children are being marched away to showers just like the Nazis said that they were taking people to the showers, and then they never came back."
The hard left apparently learned nothing from Hillary Clinton's defeat. She lost for many reasons, but one of them was her description of Trump supporters as "deplorables." Voters don't like it when elitists call them names.
Yet, we have "Morning Joe" regular Donny Deutsch, an ad executive and Scarborough sycophant, saying it's not only Donald Trump who progressives should hold accountable, it's everybody who supports him.
"This can no longer be about who Trump is, it has to be about who we are," Deutsch said about the next elections. "We can no longer say Trump's the bad guy. If you vote for Trump, you're the bad guy."
Then, the inevitable comparison to Hitler and the Nazis.
"If you vote for Trump, then you, the voter, you, not Donald Trump, are standing at the border, like Nazis," Deutsch said. "If you vote, you can no longer separate yourself" from the "evilness of Donald Trump."
A mind is terrible thing to waste, but that's what's happening to those suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome. They have lost touch with reality.
So let's take a trip to the past, to get re-acquainted with historical reality. Our guide is Jay Winik, an historian and author who penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal under the headline, "Trump's Critics Desecrate the Holocaust."
"Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe were rounded up and packed into cattle cars, with little air or light, no food and virtually no water, for a harrowing two- to three-day trip to Auschwitz. They rode in terror and anticipation, having no idea what was in store for them at the destination. Exhausted and scared, they frequently had to stand for the entire trip. Mothers clutched sons; daughters held on to fathers; children gripped both parents' hands; grandparents and the infirm struggled to stay alive. Many didn't survive the journey."
I wonder if Michael Hayden, Joe Scarborough or Donny Deutsch thought about any of that when they made their Nazi comparisons. I wonder if they considered any of what else Mr. Winick wrote.
"When the trains arrived at Auschwitz, it was a scene of chaos, confusion and horror. After days trapped in darkened cattle cars, squinting into bright floodlights lining the tracks was almost unbearable. So was the stench, like nothing the captives had ever smelled before. They didn't know it at the time, but it was the odor of burning human flesh and hair."
Question for Joe Scarborough: Does that sound like what's happening on the border between the U.S. and Mexico?
Does this?
"Outside they heard all kinds of noises: German shepherds and Doberman pinschers barking loudly, and commands in German most of them couldn't understand. When they stumbled out of the cattle cars, disoriented and anxious, timidly asking questions, the Germans shouted back, 'Raus, raus raus!' ('Out, out, out!') In the distance, the prisoners saw a skyline of chimneys, with bright orange plumes of flame shooting into the clouds. They didn't know that most of them would be ash within hours."
I found it painful to read those words. I wonder if Joe Scarborough and the others would find it painful too, or if their hatred of this president is so intense that it allows them to make Nazi comparisons with no sense of shame.
Contempt for Donald Trump may make the unhinged left feel good, but it might wind up helping him in 2020 - and his fellow Republicans in November.
The president's press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, was recently asked to leave a restaurant in Virginia because, the owner said, her restaurant "has certain standards that I feel it has to uphold, such as honesty and compassion, and cooperation."
Trump supporters won't forget what happened at that restaurant. Neither, I suspect, will independents, even if they're not big fans of the president.
And they won't forget what Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the progressive Democrat from California, said about that incident at the restaurant.
At a rally in Los Angeles she said that, "If you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you cause a crowd, and you push back on them, and you tell them they're not welcome - anymore, anywhere."
You don't have to like Donald Trump to be disgusted with his most hateful, condescending critics. Maxine Waters, Joe Scarborough and the others suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome are so far gone they can't see what's happening: They're not hurting the president they hate - but they just might be paving the way for his re-election.
Anyone could make the same arguments for any political opponent they hate.
Switch Trump to Obama or Hillary. Read it that way.
They are so generic they can be applied to any Goldstein you want.
According to NBC, Trump keeps babies in cages.
FUBG
And that's not all that is counterproductive. The entire unattended children thrown over the border hysteria is, after all, a demonstration of why we need a wall. That is definitely not the message the activists are trying to send, but it's the one that's getting through.
I don't think it's just my imagination that the tone has changed with the Supreme Court justice issue, though. There was frustration and rage before, there's real fear now, and frightened people do stupid and desperate things. Stay armed, stay safe.
Hillary picked out the Republican candidate she wanted to run against (Trump) and the media gave him so much free air time that he ended up not having to shell out the millions it should have cost him. The other Republican candidates began to complain because they were barely noticed.
Most of the Trump coverage was positive, as in "Hey, look and see what Trump is doing today."
They built him up to the point that he became the Republican candidate - Hillary's choice.
Now they are in back-er-up mode - hugely bewildered because it all blew up in their faces.
If ya ever need a good stiff laugh just think about them making Trump so accessible to the point that no one else would do, EVEN HILLARY.
People can only take so much unhinged crazy. The hard core left is now running people out of the Dem party at an unprecedented rate.
After losing 1,400+ elections since 2010, you’d think they would have stopped to cooly analyze that precipitous plunge in support, and try to formulate an overall approach that would turn that trend around, but no.
The Democrats’ reaction was to double down on what caused the voters to reject them in the first place.
Well, that obviously didn’t work, so what did they do? They screamed and collectively pulled the pins on their cranial detonators -— like somehow, throwing a national hissy fit was going to make it all better.
All they’ve done is sparked a stampede toward the exits.
Sheesh. No one in the media “built him up.”
Actual thinking Americans not addicted to the freaking tee vee saw the country’s most prominent businessman running for President and willing to run without pay to fix a beleaguered economy.
Good reason to vote for the man. And they did.
You sound like you think Trump was just “Hillary’s choice.”
A lot of us were more aware of Trump’s strengths.
Hillary had NOTHING to do with it.
Positive? I don't remember it that way at all.
The media came out of the gate attacking Trump, because they (and the Dems) rightfully saw him as the clearest threat to a Dem taking the White House again.
Don't forget that Meghan Kelly of Fox did her level best to knock Trump out of the running at the first debate. From that night forward, the MSM engaged in a coordinated assault, to take him down.
It backfired, of course, because Trump fought back, and beat them at their own game.
Someone said when your enemy is committing suicide stay out of the way.

Well said, and so right-on that your whole post bears repeating.
They have faith in their ideology. Their faith is so strong and so pure that they are going to ride the faith-train into oblivion.
One of Alinsky's rules is "If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside." Perhaps they actually think this will come through for them here.
I wonder when enough of them will be gone that the survivors will start to think like adults.
The election of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in NYC will strengthen the position of the crazies in the Democrat party.
BTW, the Capital Gazette shooting story has already pretty much vanished from the news cycle. He's an obvious nutcase who should have been denied firearms. He's a former federal employee, and it should be interesting to see what comes out that situation record-wise. Since he's still alive there will be a trial, with discovery on both sides.
I'm guessing the MSM is backing away because they already know the Jarrod Ramos story is not going to be helpful to "the narrative."
During the primaries I gave up on Fox News and switched to CNN for election coverage. Fox News was openly anti-Trump. CNN gave him relatively favorable coverage. Of course, once he had the nomination wrapped up CNN became completely unwatchable again.
MSM gave Trump a platform and more face and mouth time than he could have bought with his money. The people watching could see what he was even through all the badmouthing by the media and enough liked what they saw that we elected him.
They're leading the general population to understand there is a need for more "law and order". People don't turn to the liberals for "law and order".
If the left keeps it up, they'll get Trump a landslide in 2020 to match Nixon 1972.
That's a toughie -- one I've pondered for quite some time.
It should be obvious by now, that the Dems let the crazies onboard their train, and then stupidly let them take the controls. Now they find their train is hurtling towards oblivion, and they're helpless to stop it.
I've honestly considered that we may be witnessing the beginning of the end of the Democrats as a national party. One look at the county by county 2016 electoral map tells the story in one snapshot. Those guys are facing real doom, if they don't pull their heads out and figure out what they're doing wrong.
Perhaps they will, but what good will it do them, when the crazies have so much clout in that party?
I don't think there are enough centrists and moderates left in the party to put up a fight.
The Dems are probably going to have to hit rock bottom, then spend a decade or more in the political wilderness, to regain their senses.
Mr. Douche, I’m a bad guy am I.
My door’s open any time you think your man enough to walk through it.
However, I won’t hold my breath awaiting your arrival.
We had a few days of this....we should really full court press now.
So they can say what they really feel. While they are all stressed out.
Nothing to be gained from taunting them other than suicides. I don’t want responsibility for that.
So....now that they are totally stressed out and don’t know what the hell to do next.
Ask them nicely, they’ll tell you they want full blown Socialism across the US.
Then we win.
Game of Thrones. I’ve watched a couple episodes.
But don’t you bastards get complacent. They take the Senate, things change.
Yes, lets strut like pretty birds right now. Just keep an eye on what we need to protect.
Damn. Never thought this was going to happen. Let’s not screw it up, yeah? ;)
I told you he beat them at their own game, didn't I?
;-)
I can already see that coming. It'll be glorious.
