There are fundamentally two camps of Democrats which are a universe apart:

1) Those "legacy" Democrats who fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, who were union members and saw the D party as the "party of the working man;" and
2) the uber-radical leftist/Marxist/Nihilist Democrats who see the party as merely a vehicle to "fundamentally transform the United States."

You could almost excuse the legacy Democrats for the party devotion after they lived through the Great Depression and world wars. Now, there's no excuse.

believe me, many of those legacy Dems are peeling away from the Dem party ... really because the party actually pealed away from them ... if you look back at the 60’s and 70’s, the Pub party is WAY closer to the old Dem party then than the old Dem party is to the modern Dem party of today ...
