Putin is man we must deal with and a man who wants better relations with the USA.

Henry Kissinger has been advising President Trump who got a letter from the man Kissinger worked for, President Nixon, year ago urging him to run for President.

Kissinger always believed in dealing with both the former Soviet Union and China to get the best leverage for the USA.

I think Trump understands leverage in making deals and I have confidence in him.

Hating Russia says to me other countries are really the ones trying to influence our government and elections, not Russia as it is being alleged.

Countires hostile to Russia need to be investigated for influencing our government and elections.

In related news, Special Counsel Robert Mueller today said he wanted a sit-down interview with Vladimir Putin to find out what he knows about what Paul Manafort did 20 years ago.

Adam Schiff came out of hiding to claim this proves the noose around President Trump is tightening.

Pretty good imitation of WaPo or NYT fake news, no?

The idea that all the G7 nations are bastions of freedom and enlightenment, and Russia is a neo-Stalinist police state could only occur to people on high end drugs.

Russia has chosen a different path, there are some things about that path that we should oppose, but there are other things that could instruct (at least they could instruct some of the morons in charge of many G7 countries and smaller associated countries today).

I wish Trump would stop in and visit Orban in Budapest too.

It’s not that we need better relations with Russia, more that the “west” broadly defined needs to come to grips with reality on a number of issues (globalist causes mostly) where in fact Putin is ahead of the curve.

We should accept the annexation of Crimea and small parts of eastern Ukraine that are 80-100% ethnic Russian, and insist on no further advances west there or in the Baltic states as the quid pro quo.

Give Putin a path to respectability, and make it clear to him that killing opponents will stall the process and freeze his assets or those of his closest friends.

Trump’s the guy for this, HRC would probably have a grand mal seizure at the very sight of Putin even before he took his shirt off.

If we didn't oppose the annexation of Crimea and the Ukraine then why should Putin believe that we would oppose annexation of one or more of the Baltic states? Especially parts with large ethnic Russian populations?

There is a photograph of him smiling and shaking hands with Putin.

There are pictures of Trump smiling and shaking hands with Kim Jong Un. That doesn't make him a double-agent for Pyongyang.

Regardless of what you think about it, in 1987 a young Donald Trump got a letter from former President Nixon telling him that Pat saw him on TV and thought he would win if he decided to run for president. Trump had recently before that shared a private flight with Nixon. In his 1990 book, Surving at the Top, Trump recalled Nixon telling fascinating stories about world events and politics on the trip. He also praised Nixon for his “toughness.”

You can see a copy of the letter at:

The post implied that Trump received a letter from Nixon years after he died.

Poor writing leads to confusion.

“If we didn’t oppose the annexation of Crimea and the Ukraine then why should Putin believe that we would oppose annexation of one or more of the Baltic states? Especially parts with large ethnic Russian populations?”

To be clear, I suggested Crimea and small parts of the eastern Ukraine. But your other points are valid questions.

I would say this — we would need to make it clear that we would support 100% the territorial integrity of the Baltic states and all of the Ukraine not covered by this concession. Russian populations in the Baltic states are in decline through voluntary return to Russia, but there may not be the same level of desire among them to change their nationality. Putin has tested the waters a little with Obama in power, but seems to refrain nowadays.

If our message is clear, we’ll give you this and nothing more, and we back it up with deployment of forces evidently capable of supporting our position, then that becomes the new reality, besides which Putin has already taken those areas and annexed them, so what choice do we really have unless we’re prepared to drive Russia out of this friendly territory? I don’t think any western politicians have that ambition or objective. In the case of Crimea, it only became part of Ukraine because of internal politics in the former Soviet Union, it was historically Russian and they had agreements with Ukraine to maintain significant military assets located there.

The bits of eastern Ukraine that have seen de facto annexation are not very important in strategic terms and we can afford to make that concession. The Baltics or parts of Ukraine closer to key economic assets are a different story altogether. Putin will get this if it’s explained to him in a straightforward way, and Trump has some leverage since he probably knows things about Putin that we don’t, that Putin would not want widely known.
