Chile to expel 2,000 illegal migrants

Billionaire Chilean President Sebastian Pinera's right-wing government said Monday it has set itself a target of expelling 2,000 illegal migrants from the country by the end of the year.

The measure is part of a migration plan that the world's largest copper producer introduced to cope with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants over the last four years.

The expulsions will prioritize foreigners with criminal records, as well as those who did not take up a government offer to regularize their situation.

The last sentence should be in the opening paragraph. And how about this for a little common sense?

"The doors are open to all those foreigners who come to contribute to our country, who want to have better opportunities in life. But not those who commit, or committed, crimes in their countries or who intend to come to commit a crime against us," said Perez.

It's my understanding that Chile is,by far,the most prosperous and stable country in the Americas (after the US and Canada). So it makes sense that “wetbacks” from Peru and Ecuador (among others) would flock there.

The expulsions will prioritize foreigners with criminal records, as well as those who did not take up a government offer to regularize their situation.

This used to be considered normal behavior and a perfectly reasonable role of government.

An invasion force that doesn’t carry weapons is still an invasion force.

Where do most of these “migrants” come from?

The only sentence I read is this:

Earlier this year, Chile eased visa requirements for Venezuelans fleeing a political crisis while tightening rules for Haitians.

One site (statista) lists in 2016 the following immigrants based on percentages: Peru 31.7, Argentina 16.3, Brazil 8.8, Colombia 6-1 and others. Emphasizing the word “immigrants.”

Seems like some sanity and a sense of self preservation is breaking out worldwide - US, east Europe, Italy, Austria, Spain, Chile. Will north Europe and Canada be far behind?
