New York City isn’t representative of the U.S. at large today, and it wasn’t in 1972.

I get that the left was causing mayhem in New York back then, but that was far from true for the whole country.

Do you remember the Symbionese Liberation Army and the kidnapping of Parry Hearst? They had a big shootout with the LAPD. That happened maybe five miles from where I lived at the time.

The Black Panthers were still quite active in my neck of the woods, back then. They had tried to recruit me less than two years prior.

Yeah, there was still tension in the air, but your car wouldn’t be vandalized for displaying a Nixon bumper sticker.

Hell, man, California was still a red state, and most of Hollywood was patriotic. And the homos were still in the closet!

Sheesh, Detroit was still building muscle cars, and the NFL was a respectable organization.

Yeah, America was a better place in ‘72.

No, Manhattan was NEVER a "representative" of the whole country; however, NYC, Chicago, many cities in California, and 100s of college campuses ( campi ? ) were exploding in the late '60s and '70s!

Remember Kent State, the Columbia riots, et al?

Damned straight I remember the SLA; I also remember the FALN, the bombing of Fraunces Tavern, a nd far more stuff that isn't happening today...yet.

And thanks for proving my point, re the real Black Panthers! You were lucky that they didn't kidnap and/or murder you, when you refused to join them.

There was NO cable, no internet, no cell phones back then and the damned MSM were LYING TO ALL OF US; though sadly, not all that many knew/could see, or refused to see.

California was sort of still a RED state; however, a whole LOT of the crap started there; t'was ever thus! :-(

No, Hollyweird was NOT "patriotic" back then! The death of the studio system and the new BLACKLIST of our kind, was begun then. LETS TALK SUBVERSIVE/COUNTER CULTURE........

Okay, most late '60s and to a lesser extent '70s movies were superior to today's, but many were absolutely pushing the lefty stuff...though perhaps not as openly as today.

T.V.?

LAUGH IN, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS, SNL ( really, really REALLY bad; though not quite as dreadful as today...but getting close [how President Ford was treated!} to it ), ALL IN THE FAMILY, the truly forgettable show ( and yes, I've long ago forgotten the title of it )in which Bill Maher and another guy played flaming homosexuals, who everyone loved and accepted, and on and on and on.

Whilst some things were better back then, some things were a lot worse.

That's a pretty good summary. Hollywood was probably not "patriotic" at that point, but at least they kept their Marxist inclinations hidden for the most part. Political correctness was not yet on the scene, being used as a heavy blanket to suffocate freedom of speech.

One other big difference compared to current day: 90% of the news was local, its spread was limited by the distribution network of the newspapers or broadcast range of the TV and radio transmitters. Having everyone knowing everybody else's business and looping the video of it 24/7 is a big part of why things are worse today.
