Rhode Island bill would keep Trump off 2020 ballot unless he files his tax returns

Rhode Island’s state Senate passed a bill this week that would keep candidates off the presidential ballot in their state if they don’t release five years' worth of tax returns, according to the Providence Journal.

Sen. Gayle Goldin (D), who sponsored the bill, noted that every presidential candidate since Richard Nixon released their tax returns voluntarily until President Trump ran for office.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he cannot release his tax returns because he is under audit, but the IRS said an audit does not prevent a candidate from releasing their personal tax information.

Goldin argued that “tax returns provide essential information about candidates’ conflicts of interest.”

Tax returns, she continued, are vital information a voter needs to know about a candidate at the ballot box.

The bill passed the Democratic-led majority Senate on a 34-3 vote. It now moves to the Rhode Island state House.

California might as well pass the same law too. Bid deal. Trump has no chance of winning either state so let them make themselves irrelevant. Who cares.

Its a law targeted at a specific person and would be the legislature acting as a judicial body. Unconsitutional

Trump is using an ORIGINAL SS number. Not a certified pre-owned. ;)

According to the article, ALL candidates would be subject to the requirement.

The target of the proposed legislation would be Trump. Easily demonstrated. Never happen.

I remember when Rhode Island passed a bill that kept Obozo off of their ballots until he produced his birth certificate.

Like Rhode Island was going to vote for him anyway. This is just stupid virtue signaling.

If this had been a red state bill about requiring a birth certificate presentation (something a lot closer to constitutional since natural born citizenship is a requirement), the left would call it racist. So, I’m calling this bill racist.

Easy solution is to make all electoral votes from that state go to whomever the republican conservative is for the next 100 years.

But wait; what if we come up with a better party than the republicans have. A Freedom party or maybe a Conservative Freedom Party? Yeah; that's the ticket!!

Wouldn’t it be funny if they did this and the Republicans won a few down-ballot positions because the Democrats weren’t motivated to come out and vote?

It is a State election created by the State legislature. Every Presidential Election other than the one where the Electors actually meet is.

That does not mean this particular law is valid, however, to keep candidates off the ballot.

It is not a national election - it is State election created by the State legislature just as it is in each of the States.

Tax returns, she continued, are vital information a voter needs to know about a candidate at the ballot box.
*****************************************
Just what vital info would that be?

I’ve been a voter for many decades and I can’t think of a time when a candidate’s tax return would make me change my vote.

Rhode Island has some very nice people but their living situation is have/have not.

The place is somewhat depressing.
