Arizona Republican Jeff Flake halted an appeals court nominee last week and he’s not publicly saying why, a behind-the-scenes move that takes aim at one of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s top priorities this year. The Senate Judiciary Committee scuttled a planned vote June 14 on the nomination of Britt Grant, a pick from Georgia for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. Flake’s hold throws a cog in what has been the Senate GOP’s smoothly operating judicial confirmation machine. “Oh, it’s just something I’m working out,” Flake said Tuesday, without offering any more details. The typically media-friendly senator did say his reason didn’t have anything to do with Grant herself.

One of the things we've come to learn in recently years about the so-called World's Greatest Deliberative Body is just how exalted they consider themselves above the commoners. It seems that the Lords have instituted all manner of individual prerogative actions like the one Flake is employing to inflate their already substantial egos that the entire Senate is forced to come to one Senator as they are coming now to Flake. You would think the rest would want to stop it, but no, then they wouldn't be able to wield the power and the prestige so the privileges continue unabated. They should just be done with the pretense and start wearing powdered wigs.
