[TX] Republican Delegates Support Cruz, Trump, Disapprove of Cornyn

At the Texas GOP Convention in San Antonio this past weekend, Republican delegates . . . participated in our straw poll, which asked for their thoughts on the most prominent Republicans: President Donald Trump and US Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz. Unsurprisingly, Cruz got the highest marks. Eighty percent of those voting in our straw poll say they “Strongly Approve” of the junior senator’s performance in office. Both those who “Slightly Disapproved” and “Strongly Disapproved” combined for only 7.7 percent of respondents.

The same can’t be said for the senior member of Texas’ US Senate delegation. For Cornyn, the numbers are almost the opposite, with nearly 60 percent of delegates stating they disapproved either slightly or strongly of his record in office.

That sentiment wasn’t just expressed in the poll. As a sponsor for the convention, Cornyn’s name was emblazoned across the lanyard given to delegates with their credentials during registration. But scores of them could be seen discarded and thrown in trash cans around the convention center as delegates replaced them with alternative lanyards from grassroots organizations . . .

Cornyn has been the focus of grassroots Republicans’ frustration for years for failing to fight against the Obama administration, and most recently for his support of amnesty and the omnibus spending bill. Those decisions led some Senate districts to propose the convention censure Cornyn along with other Congressman who voted for the omnibus bills, but the convention’s temporary platform committee rejected those efforts.

Regardless, Cornyn’s horrendous numbers in the straw poll should be a concerning sign for him as he looks toward a re-election campaign in 2020.

President Trump meanwhile maintained strong support numbers from attendants—64.9 percent of delegates said they “Strongly Approved” of his record and 23.7 percent said they “Slightly Approved.”

A strong candidate could defeat Cornyn in 2020. In the 2014 Republican Primary, Cornyn only got 59.4% of the vote running against unknown and underfunded candidates.

That’s because his nose and McConnell’s rear are BFF.

I see a humongous chance for a young, aspiring Conservative primary challenger with very deep pockets to maybe displace Cornyn. Cornyn started off with a very impressive record, which he has been working to obliterate ever since. He's been a disastrous disappointment to most, if not all Conservatives. Are you listening McCaul?

Cornyn’s a two-faced weasel. He’s elevated to a high art the practice of back-stabbing conservatives during cloture votes, then, having ensured conservative defeat, grandstanding in conservative clothing during the subsequent meaningless floor vote. And he’s as bad as Hatch at sounding conservative in the run-up to election and then all Chamber of Commerce rentseeking sellout after.

We have disapproved of Cornyn for a long time now. But he keeps getting elected.

Cornyn has the (far-from-unique among RINOs) ability to be a rock-ribbed conservative...for one year out of six. Not-so-coincidentally, that year always coincides with the one year before his next election.

I cannot stand the 2-faced weasel. Yeah, he’s better than a Dem...but the real question is whether it is better to get shot in the face or stabbed in the back, when the result is essentially the same.

I keep thinking that the GOP should replace Burr as chairman of the senate intel committee, but who would replace him? Cotton probably would be my best hope, but the gop would never accept him.

Governor Abbott, perhaps?

I don’t expect Cornyn to run in 2020.

You just nailed it regarding Cornyn. TX needs to find a good conservative to replace him!

What helps Cornyn is that quite a few have heard the name but they couldn’t spell it.
