Senate rejects Trump's ZTE deal
Axios ^ | 6/18/18 | Anon

The Senate voted Monday night to reinstate the U.S. ban on Chinese telecom giant ZTE, which has violated American sanctions and was labeled as a national security threat by the Pentagon.

Why it matters: The Senate's rejection is a strong rebuke, by lawmakers from both parties, of the Trump administration's decision to resurrect ZTE.

Not sure what the President can do about this.

The Senate has passed a bill of which this has been added. It goes to the House now where it must be reconciled. The House can remove this, change it or agree to leave it in the bill.

It then goes to the President for his approval or veto.

Exactly - w/o Congress support, there is much he cannot do - wish more folks realized this as they jump the shark about DACA/Amnesty, etc.

Not sure what the President can do about this......

That’s the conundrum. Trump is the villian dictator according to the MSN, but in reality, his authority is limited. The Senate is made up of several political parties, and is the branch of government that makes law.

They make law with the President’s approval, or even disapproval if they want to override his veto, but conversely, he can’t appoint without THEIR approval.

It’s amazing how little people know about how government is supposed to work at the most basic level.

He might be able to influence some of the laws, but he can’t make them. Executive orders aare limited, and may be dissolved when a person leaves the Presidency. No President can be a dictator under our system, tho he may be able to do so under a special set of circumstances, but not for long.

The rest of government likes their power, too!

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.

Considering the President is now talking about tariffs on an additional $200 billion in Chinese goods the question is why would he now want to continue through with his help for ZTE? If makes no sense to assist them in the middle of a trade war, does it?

I always thought this was a feature of this deal. No way should ZTE be approved, but it is/was a huge need for China. I think Trump used this with China to secure the Korea summit, knowing all along the Congress would stop it. He tried, not his fault. Got Korea summit to work and didn’t have to give up in stopping ZTE. I think we were seeing the art IN the deal with this one.

ZTE is a State run company with direct ties to the Chinese military, the Pres. had to know this. He also had to know there was a possibility of Senate action but took the risk for the sake of looking good and helpful to the Chinese. Did the Senate just bail out the President? Was always the plan? I’m good with this.

Qualcomm, Intel, Acasia are just a few of the American companies who will be hurt by the sanctions.

The profit made by ZTE in violating sanctions was incorporated into the assessed fine of 1.3 billion dollars as well as an additional $400 million they must put in escrow in case any other violations are discovered.

Trump is walking a fine line between punishing ZTE and preventing harm to American based companies with whom ZTE does about 25% of it’s entire business.

It only makes sense if the goal was to get the congress and senate upset enough to get them off their duffs to do something. Trump has been doing most of the heavy lifting and the congress and the senate have been basically on the bench. This seems to have got them moving, at least a little.

Might be a little short sighted.

Getting the summit was the easy part. The heavy lifting will be getting them to actually retire their nuke program.

China can prevent that and probably will if they feel like they've been played.

Trump actually got the do-nothing Senate to do something.

That in itself is quite an accomplishment!

And it’s not Trump who looks like the bad guy but our otherwise totally feckless US Senate.

They won't do this and they can't do that, over and over.

Just a bunch of feckless couldn'ts.

So if everything the administration does is straight out of Art of the Deal then how does it look when the deal maker gets overruled?

A few months ago most of these fools probably didn’t even know “what a ZTE is”. I’d prefer the Senate do nothing like on immigration since they won’t be able or willing to react when you need to be.

I'm pretty sure they found out who ZTE was when the DOD banned ZTE phones from military facilities and Commerce banned sale of U.S. components.
