As Nashville Rapidly Expands, Residents Worry the Metropolis Is Growing Too Fast

NASHVILLE— Kathleen Ervin moved here 12 years ago from the Northeast, drawn to the relaxed atmosphere, green parks and relatively low cost of living.

But in the past five years, her commute time from her 1950s ranch house in the Glendale neighborhood to her job about 12 miles away has tripled on some days to 45 minutes because of increased traffic. Developers are buying nearby properties, tearing them down and building “tall skinnies”—multistory homes geared toward wealthier home buyers.

“We hear all this talk about how Nashville doesn’t want to become Houston, Nashville doesn’t want to become Atlanta,” said the 54-year-old account manager at a merchant processor. “Who is preventing that from happening?”

I’ll take Cutbank Mt over most of the east...even Tenn....I used to live in upstate NY...I love the area...but the humidity anywhere east of the Missouri is just too much..the farther east or south you go the worse it gets...

Late 80s early 90s I spent a lot of time on Lower Greenville and Lovers Lane. One of my favorite clubs was there and I’d dance the night away. West End used to be a hot spot as well. Oh the stories I could tell.

Overall, Latinos are the top ethnicity, but of course people live in pockets. I am in the unique situation of coming back to the exact neighborhood, well, the exact house, where I grew up. This particular neighborhood was 90% white as I grew up, 70% liberal Jews. Now it is majority mother language Armenian, Farsi, and Hebrew. The Persians also are mostly Jewish here. When we trick or treated, I only heard 25% English speakers. They are buying up $2 mil homes and renovating them more fancy. They are trying to avoid the Persian Palaces of the 90s but still enlarging these things.

I went and looked at some houses in Laurel Canyon not too long ago and said Nope. No cell reception and so tiny. Hell, I couldn’t even use gps to find addresses up there. If I want hills it has to be Calabasas Malibu way...
