I can’t make these two statements, both “according to a police report”, match up.
I think the firefighter moved to “the” left, not to “his” left.
So, left in this context means to the left side of the car, which would be to the firefighter’s right as he faces the car.
The firefighter moved to the left of the Jeep. What’s so hard to understand?
