Obama is laying low because he knows he’s very involved in all of the FBI/DOJ shenanigans and he doesn’t want to attract attention to himself right now.
I think it's more immediate than that.
He doesn't want to catch President Trump's attention, because Trump will knock the wind out of him with just a tweet or two, and Obama isn't smart enough to be able to punch back.
