Germany has responded to US President Donald Trumps egotistic policy of America First by calling on the European Union to bundle its strength and show more courage continuing the more bellicose German rhetoric that followed the US decision last week to withdraw from a G7 statement.
Under President Trump, the Atlantic has got wider, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Wednesday, standing at a podium emblazoned with the hashtag #EuropeUnited. Where the US administration overtly calls our values and interests into question, we certainly need to take a more robust stance.
During the speech, delivered to a room full of young Europeans at the Pulse of Europe event in Berlin, Maas slammed Trumps willingness to undermine alliances that had developed over decades in the time it takes to write a tweet. [ ]
The EU needed to do more than just adjust a couple of screws in the Brussels apparatus, the bloc must change its own mentality, Maas said, not least because the times were becoming radicalized by nationalism, populism and chauvinism.
We need more Europe, not less Europe, especially now, he said.
Echoing his SPD colleagues, Maas also said it was vital to keep the EUs internal border open and free even while protecting the external borders. For much too long we have left Italy and Greece alone with these tasks, he said.

Funny......Germany seemed only too eager to widen the Atlantic in 2003 when they thought they could stoke up and harness anti-Americanism to unite Europe against America and under German hegemony. Now its suddenly oh so terrible that theyre receiving the payback they so richly deserve.
Never mind the freeloading off of America for 73 years and counting to provide for their national defense......when they wont even keep their word to spend a piddly little 2% of GDP on Defense. Oh and also never mind that theyre going out of their way to make themselves more dependent on Russian energy all the while. Oh and never mind that the EU tariff on cars is FOUR TIMES what Americas tariff on cars is and theyve been running a huge surplus as a result.
Its all Trump who has been showing bad faith - not them.
Look, if the Euro twits get off their asses and start defending themselves then I am all for it. They could start by halting the Muslim invasion.

Not a good idea to give then what they want most.
As others have noted, if pulling out of Germany means a move to Poland, that would make more sense than pulling an Obama move like we did in Iraq.
The 8th AF did one heck of a job.
Well, don’t presume that’s not the idea. By treaty, all member states go by something called the “social market economy”. And the Stockholm Program is a plan to impose a police state on the continent similar to Red China’s police state.
That was Warsaw.
Just what the world needs.
Could you tell the difference between that and Berlin in spg ‘45?
“Germany’s answer to ‘America First’ is ‘Europe United’”
Oooooooh boy...
Germany Uber alles.
Berlin was much better off than Warsaw, and at least they got The Marshall Plan out of it.
The “Muslim invasion” is a rule-by-crisis tactic, just like the 2008 financial crisis (caused in a great deal by the European Central Bank raising interest rates) that allowed them to bully other EU nations economically. As soon as the Eurocrats get the people to accept their breaking the final “taboo” of police-state imperialism (which they falsely call “federalism”), that problem will clear up by surprise. If they want the USA out so badly, then it’s a bad idea to give them that.
They also got an epidemic of mass rape from the Red Army.
Paybacks are a bitch.
Funny, if you look at what globalism did to Detroit it looks the same as Warsaw in 1945.
That’s a powerful graphic.
Poland makes damn good sense, as well as a naval base at Gdansk to defend Eastern (Christian) Europe against the future Western Islamic Republics.
Didn’t Germany already try to take over Europe and fail?
