Donald Trump erased all doubts about who owns the Republican Party on Tuesday night as several Trump-backed candidates swept to victory in GOP primaries.
Primaries were held in Maine, South Carolina, Virginia, Nevada, and North Dakota. Po-Trump candidates win crucial races. The most notable among Trump's victories occurred in South Carolina, where former governor and current GOP incumbent Congressman Mark Sanford, a bitter critic of the president, went down to defeat.
In the most dramatic result in primaries across five states Tuesday, Sanford was the second incumbent House Republican to lose a primary this year – and the latest victim of intense divisions among the GOP in the Trump era.
Though he has a generally conservative voting record, his criticism of Mr. Trump as unworthy and culturally intolerant made him a target of the president's most dedicated supporters, who often elevate loyalty over policy.
Sanford was defeated by state Rep. Katie Arrington, who spent her campaign blasting Sanford as a "Never Trumper."
In Virginia, pro-Trump Senate candidate Corey Stewart easily dispatched several challengers to win the right to face off with the state's incumbent Democratic senator Tim Kaine.
Another interesting race is Nevada, where perennial candidate Danny Tarkanian, son of the legendary UNLV basketball coach, cruised to victory in the GOP primary to determine who will run in the open 3rd District. Tarkanian had originally wanted to run for the GOP senate nomination against incumbent Dean Heller. Heller had angered state Republicans and the president by voting against Obamacare repeal. But Trump and Heller mended fences, and senior Republicans convinced Tarkanian to drop his Senate bid and go for the 3rd District nomination. Heller, who easily won the primary, now has an even chance to keep the seat Republican.

Bush League Republicans must become extinct before the Republic does.
I reside/vote in District 1, SC. A great victory. Now...what about Graham?

He should have been Cantorized.

All three of the leading Republican candidates in last month’s primary in Idaho advertised support of Trump in their campaign literature and two of them, on their signs. There isn’t much doubt where the preferences of the voters of Flyover Country lie. The last ones to figure that out are basically Beltway creatures who believe that media echo chamber instead of their own political instincts, if indeed they have any.
Great night for POTUS, DJT & Trump supporters. Senate long shot now in range if the RNC & Trumpies push hard for votes and get out their voters. Democrats, Tim Kaine is within range, Clarie McCaskill is toast, Debbie Stabenow, is in range, Bill Nelson is toast, even Bob Menendez is a possible. Even the California Governor race is a possible.
POTUS, DJT must get out on the hustings starting in August at least once a week with his massive rallies. We have a good chance of destroying the entire Democrat Party politically, for many years to come. Don’t blow it Pubbies.
False. Elevate outcomes over empty rhetoric and posturing. There a whole lot of Fake Conservatives in the GOPE who pay lip service to "Conservatism" but fail to actually MOVE THE POLITICAL BALL. Sanford was one of that ilk.
Good news indeed. Even if everyone isn’t primaried, it should at least mute their public criticisms of Trump and stop their ankle-biting ...
That's pretty much how it goes.
The verb decimate originally alluded to the Roman punishment of executing one man in ten of a mutinous legion. You (by voting out) decimate one-tenth of the anti-Trump RINOs and it serves to tighten the sphincters of the remnant.
Lather, rinse, repeat the next primary cycle for those who didn't learn the lesson. MAGA in Congress ain't gonna happen overnight.
Sanford gets kicked off the Trump train!
At 11 pm last night, if you received your news from Yahoo, you would have thought it was a disastrous night for Trump and Republicans.
I’ve been meaning to ask that question to you SC guys for 10 years now...why do you keep voting for this clown?
He isn’t running again for for a few more years.
“MAGA in Congress ain’t gonna happen overnight.”
it’s actually happening quicker than i expected ... but then again, Trump’s NUMEROUS major successes happened quicker than i expected as well ...
Were any of these senate seats or just the House?
House mainly, but in VA we got Corey Stewart to run against Tim Kaine for US Senate.
Spot on.
