Orlando police officers who responded to a domestic dispute Monday were met with gunfire, which seriously wounded an officer and launched a standoff with the gunman, who then barricaded himself in an apartment with four young children.
Shortly before midnight, Orlando police and Orange County deputies announced that the suspect and the children had died.
Updates below:
12:00 a.m.
The suspect accused of shooting an Orlando police officer in the face and holding four children hostage for nearly 24 hours killed the children and then killed himself, police said.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina said they lost communication with Gary Lindsey about 8:30 p.m., but were still trying to end the situation peacefully.
They said Lindseys phone had a poor connection, so negotiators tried to get him another phone.
Once they did, SWAT team members were able to see that one of the children was dead.
Mina said the children were shot.
"Our hearts go out to the family of those four children. A long day like this is physically and emotionally draining," Mina said.
The officer who was shot, Kevin Valencia, remains in critical condition but is expected to survive, Mina said.
The identities of the children have not been released.
Four children are dead following a hostage situation and a standoff with a suspect accused of shooting an Orlando police officer in the face.
The suspect, Gary Lindsey, is also dead, police and sheriff's office sources told Channel 9.

There is a heck of a lot more at the base site.
ladies, don’t let losers reproduce.
What else do we need to know?
Can’t pray for the dead.
This is a senseless tragedy, and it is heartbreaking. As another poster said, it’s going to get worse.
Don’t flounder, make sure Christ is your foundation and pray for his will to be done.
He’s upset for the children, why don’t you take a breath and possibly attempt at being a decent man.

The Number of Murderers and Murder Suspects With the Middle Name Wayne Is Insane
On the topic of infamous murders, few are wider known than serial killer John Wayne Gacy, the killer clown, who murdered almost three dozen boys and young men during the 1970s. Then, of course, theres Elmer Wayne Henleyquite a bit lesser known than Gacywho was sent to prison in 1974 for the spree of murders he committed alongside Dean Allen Corll. Then theres Monty Wayne Lamb, serving a life sentence for a triple homicide in Dallas. And Alexander Wayne Watson, Jr., convicted of killing multiple victims.
We think you see the pattern: They all have the middle name Wayne. It seems coincidental, but Wayne turns out to be a really common middle name for both convicted (and alleged) murderers. So much so, in fact, that News of the Weirds Chuck Shepherd kept a running tally of them through 2008; and as of now, his list of killer Waynes has 223 people on it.
Shepherd does have a number of disclaimers attached to his list. For one, he notes that the list includes those convicted of and charged with murder, admitting that some of the men might, in fact, be innocent. Like Anthony Wayne Grimm, who was acquitted of a 1994 murder back in 2004. (These days, we gather, hes just going by Anthony Grimm.)
Also, Shepherds list only focuses on murderers whose crimes and convictions made the news. That there are still over 200-plus murderers whose middle name is Wayne is an alarming statistic.
More recently, an article for Freakonomics discussed what has become known as the Wayne theory, and the Sword and Scale podcast did some investigating of their own, calculating that 0.41 percent of convicted murderers have the middle name Wayne.
Having no other basis for comparison, [we] cannot arrive at the conclusion that murderers are more likely to have the middle name Wayne, said podcaster Heather Sutfin of the findings. But when our calculationsbased on what data we have availablereflect that roughly half of the population having Wayne as a middle name has been convicted of murder, it certainly makes you wonder.
What folking genius didn’t order the place stormed and the children saved?
The suspect accused of shooting an Orlando police officer in the face and holding four children hostage for nearly 24 hours killed the children and then killed himself, police said.
Both strategies have worked, and both have failed. Law enforcement can only go by how they are trained to react, not based on the emotional response (which supports going in hard).
I was hoping that some LEO didn’t inadvertently gun them down.
..even so come quickly Lord Jesus......
The headline makes it sounds like the police killed everyone.
No worse enemy to a child than mama’s boyfriend.
It was never about the kids for him. It was about him and hurting others. He knew that harming those kids would cause grief. If he couldn’t be happy and the center of the world no one wold. Extreme narcissism.
Local News this AM is reporting a triple homicide pretty close us
Almost everybody has a "middle name". We just don't use them very much. It gets used when someone is arrested, to distinguish the suspect "John Wayne Smith" from most of the other "John Smiths" in the community.
My Gaydar just pegged.
Post-birth. Before that, the kid's worst enemy is mama herself.
Mine exploded and caught fire ...
“Gary Wayne Linsey”
The Wayne Lee Ray postulate...
I am a firm believer in demonic possession - overwhelming whispering in the ear.
Too many of these are textbook now. Man kills pregnant woman. Woman kills all of her children. Man kills all of his children. Man kills wife/girlfriend.
While I do believe in mental illness, I also believe these demons mimic it or capitalize on it.
Agree!!!!
