Ukraine and Crimea are two completely separate issues. Insisting the port of Boston is part of the United States and insisting that an extension of Maine into the old Arcadia into Quebec province, taking in more French Canadians are two very different arguments.
The spirit in which the annexation was done was extremely hostile and echoing of the worst impulses Russia is historically inclined to. People on the island in 2014 were carrying portraits of Josef Stalin and singing old Soviet anthems to celebrate.
New laws and regulations governing spheres like business, religion, and housing have forced numerous people/establishments out including Ukrainian Catholic convents and churches, Ukrainian Orthodox clergy (who are mistreated by Russian Orthodox authorities) and of course numerous Tatar people have been forced into exile in places like Kiev— though many stay Tatars because they are fiercely devoted to the island and have historically endured way worse.
Due to visa restrictions, Russian citizens have less travel mobility throughout the E.U. and less opportunities to work abroad.
But hey. Cheers to everyone else who chose Putin! Just don’t complain later...when life is not what it’s cracked up to be and even Ukraine’s far from perfect government seems preferable by comparison.

No, but I do not believe the likes of despots like Putin would be sitting as high and mighty had Trump been president. It was Russia’s mistake to make, but weak leadership in the West allowed for it. Things will be different now. They already are. Blessings!
