One of the new council members in one of Georgias biggest cities picked Malcolm X over the Bible for her swearing-in.
Mariah Parker was sworn in this week to represent District 2 on the Athens-Clarke County Commission and refused to take her oath of office on the Bible, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
They asked if they would like the Bible and I said no. My mother asked if there was a copy of the Constitution around. No, Ms. Parker told the AJC.
I wanted Malcolms book, she said, referring to The Autobiography of Malcolm X, which, despite its title, was written by Alex Haley after its subjects assassination by members of the Nation of Islam. I think they saw it coming, said Ms. Parker, who also raised her fist in a black-power salute while taking the oath.

Just curious, but just how many hotbeds of KKK controlled areas did Malcolm X ever march into? In Ga? Any?
I think Malcom was on the right track.
The Bible or the U.S. Constitution should be the only two choices.
Is that Barry with Castro? It looks like Barry. Maybe he is Barry’s daddy...
A complete embarrassment to the Peach state.
I think your right, I have thought the same for a long time now. We lost something that day that is hard to describe and it impacted Society in many ways, a lot of them in a negative way.
I think since that date, then with the war and the other assassinations we have become a more hardened and cynical society where now no matter what happens we are no longer shocked or outraged by much of anything.
Making a fool of herself.
Gosh mom, do you remember the day I was sworn after being elected to a government position, and I decided it was a great idea to belittle religion, herald a man of bad character, and trash the country as part of the swearing in ceremony?
Boy those were the days!
Yes honey, be careful with that barbed wire. To bad our ideological brothers and sisters turned on us, and most other citizens.
You shall know them by their works. Trouble ahead........
I'm confused. Are you speaking of GHW Bush, or LBJ? Or maybe Ari?
so she’s swearing allegiance to Islam -
should not be legal -
God does not take mocking lightly.

Every state has their embarrassments, but Georgia does seem to have more than our share of the not-so-bright attention-getters. What to do?
Really, though, it’s the folks in Cynthia McKinney’s district who should have been embarrassed. And they never were.
no need for fear, God is in control. He lets people act as such and then reels them back to Him or smacks them upside the head so to speak. God always wins.
Those of us who believe in God and His son our LORD Jesus just need to stand firm and not waver :)
I was there, too. 1960-66 were great; things started to go to you-know-what during the summer of 1967. Only good event that summer was the Israeli victory in the Six Day War. Everything else was a slide into chaos; I began to believe that the End Times were upon us.
The year 1968 was worse, far worse. Tet offensive (our victory but not reported as such), assassinations, riots, gun control, campuses in turmoil, hippie counterculture, Beatles thinking they were God, I was studying Revelation like never before.
And now this bushy Afro’d throwback to the long hot summers. Newsies wonder why gun sales continue to spike.
Well, at least the damage she will do is only to a county district...
Well said and I totally agree. :-)
Demographics my friends demographics.
