. After months of verbal sparring and aggressive campaigning, the ballot-heavy 11th Congressional District primary season has finally come to an end for the five Democrats and five Democrats vying for the two-year seat held by longtime Republican incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen, who announced in January that he will not seek re-election.
With 99 percent of the precincts counted, Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot backed by Joe Biden, swept the Democratic nomination receiving 77.3 percent of the total over challengers Tamara Harris who got 14.5 percent of the vote and Mark Washburne, Alison Heslin and Mitchell Cobert, who each received less than 4 percent.
The Republican nomination went to Assemblyman Jay Webber with 39.9 percent, topping challengers Peter De Neufville with 30.6 percent, Antony Ghee with 21.8 percent and Patrick Allocco and Martin Hewitt who each got less than 5 percent.
In the 5th District race, Republican John McCann outpaced Steve Lonegan for that party's nomination receiving 53 percent of the votes to Lonegan's 47 percent. McCann will face off in November against 5th District incumbent Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer, who ran uncontested for the Democratic nomination.
