U.S. job openings rose to 6.7 million at the end of April, compared with the 6.3 million Americans who were unemployed
The U.S. had more job openings this spring than unemployed Americans.
For the first time since such record-keeping began in 2000, the number of available positions exceeded the number of job seekers, the Labor Department said Tuesday, a shift that is rippling across the economy and affecting the behavior of employers and workers.
U.S. job openings rose to a seasonally adjusted 6.7 million at the end of April, a record high, and more than the 6.3 million Americans who were unemployed during the month. Openings had exceeded the available labor pool beginning in March, according to revised figures released Tuesday.
The figures are the latest sign the U.S. is facing a historically tight labor market. The jobless rate ticked down further in May to a seasonally adjusted 3.8%, the lowest since April 2000, the Labor Department said last week. The last time the rate was lower was in 1969, when young men were being drafted into the Vietnam War.

I’d guess it would be in the best interest of business to change their business models in regards to part time work.
There are tens of thousands of very experienced retired/older workers who already worked 20-30-40 years, would likely be happy take on part time work, but employers don’t offer many part time positions.
If they want employees, they need to open up more part time work for the retired/older folks.
What’s good for America is bad for democrats. Look for Nasty Pelosi to tell us why job openings outnumber jobless is a bad thing.
Wonderful news!
We are NOT winning. You will have to drag the applicants out of the tattoo parlors and put them in drug rehab before they apply. Just ask the military.

probably misleading. “Jobless” does not mean all people able to work that are not working, it just meansthe number of those they have on the jobless rolls.
There are jobs created by people who have jobs (transportation, clothing, lunch, etc).
Exactly so.
The US labor force took a huge hit, 2008-2011, from which it has recovered only very slowly. The unemployment rate has been uniquely misleading since then as it doesn’t account for the decline of the labor force.
There is still an enormous “reserve army of the unemployed” out there.

Don’t forget their parents basements. I was discussing this with a friend today.
My father fought in the south Pacific. His twin brother was a waist Gunner in a B 17 flying over Europe. I entered the military in 1968. I wasn’t happy about it at the time, but like my Dad and Uncle, it was something I knew in my heart that I had to do.
I sincerely believe that with the exception of those now serving and patriots like them, we would have an impossible time finding sufficient millienials to step up to the plate and be counted if needed.
So no more welfare and EBT....right?
Wages should start climbing soon.
I am soooooo tired of winning!

Let’s put on our Insane Pelosi Hat.
“If evil Republicans had not cut government job training programs, we would now have enough trained workers to fill all these openings. Republican obstructionism to a more vigorous role by government in job training is continuing to harm our economy.”
It is really surprising how reducing welfare increases the pool of available workers, isn’t it? “Whoa? I have to now WORK to put food on my table? Well, day-um. I better get me a job.”
NTOWY - Not tired of winning yet.
I wonder how the left is going to pee on this bit of good news.
Hunger is a great motivator.
You asked “I wonder how the left is going to pee on this bit of good news.”
See my post #15 for my prediction.
Yes, I saw that. No doubt she will find some way like that to twist it.
And I also saw that it not only didn’t take long for someone to pee on it, it wasn’t even leftists.
