GENEVA (Reuters) - Poverty in the United States is extensive and deepening under the Trump administration whose policies seem aimed at removing the safety net from millions of poor people, while rewarding the rich, a U.N. human rights investigator has found.
Philip Alston, U.N. special rapporteur on extreme poverty, called on U.S. authorities to provide solid social protection and address underlying problems, rather than "punishing and imprisoning the poor".
In a report, Alston said that as welfare benefits and access to health insurance were being slashed, President Donald Trump's tax reform awarded "financial windfalls" to the mega-rich and large companies, further increasing inequality.
Extreme poverty in the United States, however, is not new. Alston said U.S. policies since President Lyndon Johnson's war on poverty in the 1960s have been "neglectful at best".
"But the policies pursued over the past year seem deliberately designed to remove basic protections from the poorest, punish those who are not in employment and make even basic health care into a privilege to be earned rather than a right of citizenship," Alston said.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A U.S. official in Geneva, asked for comment, told Reuters: "The Trump Administration has made it a priority to provide economic opportunity for all Americans."
Almost 41 million people or 12.7 percent live in poverty, 18.5 million in extreme poverty, and children account for one in three poor, Alston said. The United States has the highest youth poverty rate among industrialized countries, he added.
However, the data from the U.S. Census Bureau he cited covers only the period through 2016, and he gave no comparative figures for before and after Trump came into office in January 2017.

More fake news.
Well, maybe the point is that, under Trump, private sector jobs are becoming available for almost everyone who wants one.
But, some don’t want them.
The stats run only through 2016. Anybody remember who was President then ?
Memo to the UN pervert. But “America’s poor” are not as “destitute” as they were on the other side of the border. Take a hike moron.
BARF!!!!
I contend:
There are NO U N ‘Experts’.
There is an army of U N LEACHES.
> Philip Alston, U.N. special rapporteur on extreme poverty <
Personally, I would not trust the opinion of anyone who has the title “special rapporteur”.
The UN wouldnt tell any lies would they? I mean, the UN is full of fine, upstanding, wonderful, beautiful people, right? /S
Yahoo, Reuters and a UN “expert”.
All you need to know.
[However, the data from the U.S. Census Bureau he cited covers only the period through 2016, and he gave no comparative figures for before and after Trump came into office in January 2017.]
The useless article is nothing but a prop that holds up the headline in order to carry a narrative.
We should cut our UN contribution to match Chinas.
Experience shows more government social programs to alleviate a problem creates more of the problem.
Good grief and this woman calls herself a “journalist”?
And before coronating this cat as an “expert’ Stephanie . . . don’t you think good ‘journalism’ would include a background check to see this guy’s politics and agenda?
And to point that out? You “journalists” give way too much credit to pols and bureaucrats with self serving agendas, just taking their words for granted yet labeling them “experts”
Oh, that’s too much trouble?
Republican in office - roll out the poor.
This is a total, despicable hit piece and should be pulled.
Geez, Stephanie, you didnt even notice THAT?
Or perhaps you purposely ignored that little tidbit since it doesn’t fit your own personal narrative?
Tell me this is a bullshit report
More proof that the UN should be out of the US, and the US should be out of UN.
It has devolved from the high-minded intent at its founding to a New World Order, One World Government cesspool to rival DC.
The United Nations fears the truth.
