“I made lead soldiers by melting fishing sinkers and pouring them into a mold.”

Same for me, so the soldiers are definitively lead.
I have fond memories of the time I spent doing it with Grandpa, it’s like Christmas everytime. I enjoyed every step, from deburring to painting to repairing the molds or making new molds. That’s when I learned hard work can be so much fun.

I think they were polyethylene and some plastics still have various heavy metals.

Also, there was a fountain pen that had plastic cylinders full of ink. You put them inside the pen and when you screw on the end with the tip, it punctured the cylinder. Well, I used to light those up when they were empty and I stood on a chair and held them up by the ceiling. The drops fell into a metal waste basket from about 8 feet. Fantastic "zzzziiiip."

I am guilty of crimes against plastic-humanity for the way I treated my army men.

How did you miss out on "floods?"

I dunno. '50's kid...suburb bordering Detroit...the kids I hung out with were not very humorous. (shrugs shoulders)

Gen. McAuliffe, Bump!

We bought the home we live in from the widow of a very good friend who was in the 101st Airborne then. He came in behind the lines at Normandy in a glider, parachuted into Holland and was trucked into the Bulge in the relief.

One hell of a tough little man. They were both extremely find people. Close friend of my father since childhood.

That would have been General McAuliffe, commanding the defense of Bastogne with the 101st Airborne et al, with the benefit of a delaying action east of Bastogne buying just enough time for the 101st and others to move into position at Bastogne before the Germans could get there by the 4th Division, 99th Division, and the 28th Division (Pa. National Guard) / 687th FABN, among others... :)

Now that General McAuliffe and his eloquent defense of Bastogne have come into the conversation...

One of the gifts my two brothers and I would get on Christmas when we grew up in Detroit in the sixties would be a large bag of plastic army men and a large bag of rubber bands. We would set up the soldiers in the upstairs hallway and shoot rubber bands at them for hours.

Same here. Then the first gen G.I. Joe arrived one Christmas and the little guys were almost entirely forgotten! It was almost as cool as my Mattel M-16 ‘full-auto sound’ toy gun!

I used to love playing with those little green guys, especially around July 4th when I could get my hands on some firecrackers and stage simulated battle scenes.

My how times have changed, as too many parents nowadays try to shelter their sons from any imaginative play that might someday help turn them into real men.

I wonder what would happen if I donated a lot of these green soldiers or other such items to Toys For Tots. Never mind, I don’t wonder. The green men would get sent to a green garbage can.
