That depends entirely on who the predominant party in a particular state is: In blue states, calling yourself an independent is done to hide you’re a republican, and in red states its probably the inverse though I’ve never lived in a red state. In Bernies case... he really is a socialist and therefore neither a republican or democrat.

IIRC, Lieberman was another person who at least once ran as Independent and voted with Democrats.
