Summer break is in full swing in Austin and the district wants to remind parents that starting Monday they will feed any person under the age of 18 breakfast and lunch free of charge... "One in four students in Travis County are living in a food-insecure householdthat means that they don't know where their next meal is coming from."... Parents can simply drop their kid off at the school to eat or join them.
"Kids can come on their own, we would prefer they come with an adult for supervision. Adults can also eat with us. Breakfast is $2.25 and lunch is $3.50," says Tanner. Capital Metro is also offering free rides to students which can offer a route for kids to get to a local school. And unlike the school year where you have to show your school ID to get a meal - that doesn't happen in the summer.

Our district is only doing lunch this year at various locations for up to 18 years old. Last year, they did breakfast and lunch and offered free to anyone 0-21.
Parents should not have to feed their kids. Taxpayers should be more responsible.
“”One in four students in Travis County are living in a food-insecure household”
__
And I GUARANTEE they dress well, have nice jewelry, and have better electronics than many in the USA.
Why waste money on food?
.
.
“Food insecure household” is one of those Millenial buzzwords that drives me just freakin’ nuts!
How are we supposed to teach our kids that there is NO FREE LUNCH when these people keep giving them free lunch?
Doing the same thing here in Cincinnati.
I wonder how many of these kids in “food-insecure” households are morbidly obese.
You left out tats and recreational drugs on your excellent list.
Also, how many worthless liberals are making 5-6 figure yearly salaries for managing these payments from tax paying Texans to those who just take.
Based on what? I'd like to see a "weigh-in" of the parents in these households. I doubt there is a BMI of less than 35.
Can I ask a stupid question?
Obama was president for eight years, and was liberal, compassionate, the whole 9 yards. And the food stamp SNAP program has been around for decades. My stupid question is, how can so many people be food insecure???
And if they are, who didn’t Obama work to solve this major societal problem, if the problem is that we simply didn’t spend enough on food stamps? Why is anyone hungry in America?
Ok I asked a few stupid questions, but still worth discussing.
LOL, or maybe we shouldn’t laugh. But it’s true, that a big number of poor people seem to be overweight. Which begs questions as to whether they are really lacking enough to eat
What about people who “identify” as under 18?
/sarc(?)
I knew a teacher that would send every student in her class home with a loaf of sandwiches during holiday breaks because she knew the kids never got fed at home.
Didn’t you just post an article yesterday about how Austin property taxes are skyrocketing through the roof?
Well, as you know and I know, THIS is but one reason why.
Yes and yes.
Our district built a multi-million dollar baseball field a few years back. It was this close to being finished and they tore it down and started over....
>>>Last year, they did breakfast and lunch and offered free to anyone 0-21<<<
Age discrimination, pure and simple.
A baseball field? Gee. It’s nothing for school districts to spend 20-30 million and more for a football stadium.
But baseball?
I find it hard to believe this “The district reports that more than half of their student population relies on that food because parents might have a hard time affording their next meal.” Since Austin wants to be a sanctuary city I’ll be they are talking about feeding the illegal alien dependents here.
It is incredibly sad, but the fact is, may parents simply don’t give a damn about their kids.
We have to stop PAYING people to feed, breed and vote Democrat and things like this won’t happen.
Yeah, I didn’t see anything wrong with the old grass field and wooden bleachers. It’s not like we’re a rich district and went to any state championships.
