Retiring Rep. Tom Rooney (R-Fla.) criticized the National Rifle Association (NRA) for refusing to accept “reasonable” gun control regulations in an interview published Wednesday.
Rooney, a gun owner and Second Amendment advocate, told Sarasota Magazine that he thought raising the minimum age for assault rifle purchases was a “reasonable” measure.
“The problem is with the political arm of the NRA,” Rooney said. “I don’t know in the last 10 years whether there has been any compromise with guns by the NRA.”
The NRA said in a February statement to the Washington Post that raising the age for purchasing assault rifles to 21 was unconstitutional for those between the ages of 18 and 20.
“Legislative proposals that prevent law-abiding adults aged 18-20 years old from acquiring rifles and shotguns effectively prohibits them for purchasing any firearm, thus depriving them of their constitutional right to self-protection,” the statement said.
Rooney told Sarasota Magazine that part of the problem was disagreement among the Republican Party, despite controlling the White House and both chambers of Congress.

Any gun law is likely an abridgement of the Second Amendment.
There are NO reasonable gun control laws.
But then I’m all for reasonable and sensible congress control laws.
Most 18 year olds don't have the $200 for the tax stamp or the $20 000 to buy an assault rifle.

Every time a Congress-critter uses the term “reasonable” or “common sense”, it’s a clear sign they’ve gone over from doing the people’s business to doing business to ensure they make the millionaire transformation desired by all who go to the District of Corruption.
And the AAA still promotes car use.
Libs love to measurenin subjective terms.
No new laws unless it is part of a compromise. I only see them taking larger and larger bites of our rights, but I never see them give up anything THEY care about.
You want to raise the age on assault rifles? Ok, then I want all restrictions and background checks removed from all 22lr guns... buy them right over the counter at the gas station.
You want to ban semi autos? Then I want all revolvers no longer classified as guns. Carry them anywhere anytime, buy swap, sell and trade.
No more free bites at the apple of my freedom. You take a bite of mine, I get to take a bite outta whatever YOU hold important. Otherwise, no deal.
Yep, that’s right.
That’s right, Rooney. The NRA stands pretty firm on the Bill of Rights.

Who defines what’s “reasonable”? Certainly not the ones being forced to compromise.

Once again, the principle of the Second Amendment does NOT come from the Constitution. It is my right ordained and given to me by God Almighty.
I never heard of a “Rooney”, who wasn’t looney.
First of all, is he asking the AAA to “compromise” into letting alcohol and drugged drivers populate the roads?
The NRA can have any agenda they want, they are NOT a government entity. They exist to support the 2nd Amendment, and the gun-owning/using public under that Amendment.
Looney knows that if the NRA says, “screw you”, that all the gun-owners will go along with it. Meanwhile, the NRA knows that IF they “compromise” with RINO’s and Libs, all their membership will disappear.
It’s a standoff, and insofar as the NRA has the membership, and all the guns, I think the NRA will do OK.
Congressman, go back home to your “looney bin”.
I learned gun safety and marksmanship taught by NRA instructors in the 7th grade in school (1958 Hampton, Virginia). If you keep dangerous things out of the hands of young people and do not teach them the proper handling of firearms, then you get young people with a fascination for guns but without the knowledge to handle them properly.
