State police were shocked to find that after banning bump stocks and threatening violators with 5 years in prison, not a single resident has complied.
The state of New Jersey has become the latest to ban bump-stocks for firearms, and despite strict threats to owners who refuse to turn their newly illegal devices over to police, not a single resident has complied with the new law.
The legislation banning the popular A-15 accessory, Senate Bill 3477, went into effect immediately after it was signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie in January, and it gave residents 90 days to “voluntarily surrender any bump stock in their possession to a law enforcement agency.”
The bill criminalizes the possession or sale of “bump stocks,” which it defines as “a device designed to attach to a semi-automatic firearm in order to fire shots in rapid succession in a manner that simulates an automatic firearm.” This new law adds to an existing state law banning guns that have been deemed as “assault rifles.”

It is possible that there are no bump stocks in NJ.
They have very draconian laws and few gun owners.
Seems like the NJ residents complied 100% with the law. Move on, nothing here.
Or maybe everyone lost theirs in a boating accident.
Only a stark raving lunatic would call the cops in New Jersey and turn in a bump stock. I cannot think of a faster way to get your house searched and you to wind up in prison.
They would take it as evidence you had an AR-15 and be off to the races.

My understanding is that most “gun people” are not fans of bump stocks and they are considered a sort of “shoot-em-up” fun toy. Their only practical use is when you are staring down a stadium of people and you can’t miss. That is not very typical.
I'm not sure this definition would even apply to bump stocks. The defining feature of an automatic weapon is that it fires more than one round with a single pull of the trigger. A bump stock does not simulate this - no matter what you do it still fires just one round per pull of the trigger. If you say the definition applies to anything that makes the gun fire faster then it would include a lighter trigger or even a fore grip.
Let’s call it a “preview”, and hope that government is learning a lesson.

It could be that most people in new jersey can’t read so they are unaware of the new law.
There are laws, and then there is human nature.
That is the goal of the “common-sense gun laws” types.
I will be honest, I had never heard of a bump stock until after Las Vegas. Living in MA I received my “letter from the Attorney General.” I tossed it as soon as I saw it was from Maura.
I think, like a lot of things, the bump stock ban is one of those things that pols will point to as a great accomplishment. They will point out how none has been used in a crime in MA since the ban.
My guess is that none had been used BEFORE the ban.
I’ve owned firearms since I was 12 (in the early 1970s I got my first gun from my grandfather.) I am pretty sure if bump stocks were a hot commodity, I would have heard of them somewhere along the line.
But, I was gleefully ignorant of their existence until I was in my late 50’s. That tells me that bump stocks were not really a big deal to begin with.
