LELAND, N.C. (WECT) - It's every mother's worst nightmare. On Sunday, April 15, Shawn Winkler shot himself in the head in the garage of his Leland family home. He was 30 years old.
"Shawn started out as a very happy, loving boy, " said his mother Sarah Winkler in a document she sent to WECT news.
On the day Shawn killed himself, Sarah said he began acting erratically and trashing his room. Shawn, armed with a gun, told his mother he was going to Holly Ridge to kill his girlfriend and five others. Sarah said Sean believed everyone was in on a scheme to drive him crazy.
"That's when I heard a pop sound. It sounded like those plastic poppers at New Year's. The next thing I know, officers were running around everywhere putting up crime scene tape," Winkler explained.
"I was told Sean shot himself in the head in the garage. He was still breathing when he got to the hospital. Once at the hospital, he tested positive for marijuana and meth," Winkler said.

“I can understand this sentiment coming from a grieving mother. “
So can I.
I remember the anger from Art Linkletter when his daughter killed herself.
.
“Shawn, armed with a gun, told his mother he was going to Holly Ridge to kill his girlfriend and five others.”
Good thing Shawn took are a more responsible course of action.
He hung on to enough sanity to stop himself from killing anyone else.
30 years old and living at home with his free time taken up with drugs instead of a job,a crappy boss, bitchy wife , a mortgage, a yard, car payments, A broken washer and or dryer, health insurance premiums, and a couple of rugrats...
Meth and dope only gave him 2 problems.. and he couldn't handle that.. I'm sorry your son is dead, but he was never really living anyway.
Awesome. I’m down with that. Kill a drug dealer. Society would cure itself.
Her son was a would be mass murderer.
Nothing to be proud of.
In lieu of flowers, kill a drug dealer.
No.
In lieu of flowers, execute a drug dealer (after a short trial).
Yes.
Not a good idea. The country already has a doctor shortage.
To most your post would seem hard heart-ed and uncaring and it was. However, it was a most and exactly correct post. I agree with your post. The real hell of it is those with drug problems have many sources of help if they will avail themselves of it. If they do not choose to avail themselves of this free help I do not mourn their demise.
From the obituary this woman wrote: “Shawn was a troubled soul who lacked a good male role model.”
In other words this was YET ANOTHER single mother situation, no male present, completely incapable from the get-go in raising a healthy male child, and now she’s blaming others for the nigh-inevitable consequences of her own choices.
Single motherhood is an abomination. If she is not a widow, a single mother should be shunned as a pox on society, and children removed to a healthy and intact family for their own protection.
whoa, that was a blast from the past
“Lacked a good male role model”
Gee Mom, I wonder who might possibly be at least partially responsible for that?
A touch harsh, but I understand where she’s coming from.
Art Linkletter was a happy, humorous guy and to see the anger in him was so out of character it stayed in my mind.
Carroll O’Connor also had a tough reaction after the suicide of his son.
.
Imagine if every ccw holder in America took out one serious career/violent/drug dealer criminal thug.
Imagine just how much safer the country would become, in that one day.
That day may come. For now I’d just settle for the cops arresting them and a judge sentencing them for life or death. I used to listen to the police scanner. “Okay - he just ran over to the corner of 4th and Colgate. Probably trying to get lost among the gang bangers.” It was pretty amazing. I recall one guy they helped that shot himself in the leg. “Yeah - it’s Big Freddy - remember we arrested him a month ago?”
