I like how Trump touched on making North Korea much better.
The guy didn’t miss a trick in that letter.
“Though the prospect of a different future still glimmers, Northeast Asia is largely back to where it started from with North Korea.”
Very complicated, from every perspective.
I’d prefer Trump does tap the brakes on this deal for now, vs allowing the US to look desperate and in search of a legacy.
That is what happened between Obama and the Iran Deal.
I still think Pres. Trump and Kim will eventually meet this year. Kim has released hostages and opened the southern border (here and there). It would be difficult to slam the door o the outside world once again.
By hedging on giving up their nuclear program at the last minute, they wanted to see how badly we wanted to cut a deal. They probably thought public pressure for peace would make it difficult for Trump not to engage. By calling their bluff, we’ll now see how badly they want to make a deal, at the same time showing them that Trump is secure enough to do what he wants with them, public opinion be dammed. It’s all good.

Good analogy. And besides - Trump has already won the game. China forced lil’ Kim to punt. Trump recovered the missed field goal. And the game is essentially over. The US won.
Here’s the only reason to have a meeting. North Korea announces: “We are willing to completely and verifiably dismantle our nuclear weapons program. What will you do for us in exchange?”
Anything less than this mutual understanding and scheduling a meeting is a total waste of time.
I agree. I also think there are other dynamics in there.
Seems to me Trump is playing this pretty cleverly so far.

Kim boxed himself in and Pres. Trump simply describes the boundaries of the box back to him and how sad he is that Kim lives in a box.

Typical media ... slam him for meeting with Kim, and slam him for canceling meeting with Kim. They’re nuts.
Watch out for South Korean President Moon Jae In. He BADLY wants a legacy before he steps down and with make a deal with Kim Jong Un with or without Trump.
No he didn’t. Not even close. Trump is very good at springing traps with a big stick so’s not to get caught in them. This was just another sprung trap.
SK won’t make a deal without collaboration with USA. We are defending them against NK. We have significant skin in the game sitting at the DMZ. If SK doesn’t want us there anymore, Japan is happy to take more US military protection and spending.
