Can Stacey Abrams Change the Way Democrats Win in the South?

Gene Talmadge must be turning over in the grave. On Tuesday, Georgia Democrats chose an African-American woman, Stacey Abrams, as their party’s candidate for governor. And not just any African-American woman. Ms. Abrams, the former minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives, ran as an outspoken progressive and was endorsed by, among others, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and the liberal group MoveOn.org.

When Mr. Talmadge served as Georgia’s governor for three terms during the 1930s and 1940s, the Georgia Democratic Party was viewed as the defender of segregation and white supremacy in the state. After African-Americans began voting in large numbers following the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, Georgia Democrats like Jimmy Carter and Roy Barnes campaigned and governed as moderates and forged biracial coalitions that included a substantial minority of white voters along with the overwhelming majority of African-American voters

Would a republican ever vote for a candidate that owes the IRS $50,000 and has over $170,000 in credit card and student loan debt?

Stacy Abrams Finances

The 'race' card is the only card in her deck. Hopefully, she will be a drag on all democrat candidates.

Hey Old Grey Lady....wish in one hand and crap in the other. See which one fills up first.

No, she cannot and will not win. Nor will others who try this strategy in running for statewide office in the Southern states. Denigrating Southern heritage shockingly, doesn’t play particularly well here.

They need to move to the middle and lie better.

Their radical base will keep them from doing it.

If there was a Blue Wave, you’d see them recruit moderate candidates in the South.

They’ve nominated racial gay progressives in GA and TX.

Yeah, a winning formula.

On election day I visited my local senior center which is also a voting precinct. It’s located in a very liberal, hipster neighborhood near downtown Atlanta.

Just a few people were voting, very quiet. I remember all the Dem excitement 4 years ago when Jimmy Carter’s grandson ran for Governor and Sam Nunn’s daughter ran for the Senate. This year was very different, very few Dem yard signs and low Dem enthusiasm.

Millennials don’t seem interested in voting for Abrams.

Maybe it’s time we call ‘progressive’ for what it is: communist.

I applaud the dems march to the left. It will pay dividends in November. For us.

Yes, Abrams will be a drag on all Dem candidates. All statewide offices in GA are held by the GOP. After the election in Nov. GA will still be totally controlled by the GOP. Not one Dem will win a statewide election.

The left is just making the most of the one victory she is going to have this election season. The article is about the statewide mood of Democrats which is duly noted. They are in “resistance” mode still. Nothing new to me.

It’s a smart move, the other Stacey was white, and as 2016 showed, being a “woman” isn’t enough.

This will be a shame test. As in hey Georgia, PROVE you aren’t racist.

If it works, yes... it may have an effect on how dems run in the south.
Here in the one party blue state of Maryland, we’ve solved for the issue of how republicans run... they run mostly as democrats, as in literally members of the dem party...or as very moderate republicans and only for Governor.

She cannot handle her own money. She is in debt. Bribes will take care of that problem. The big problem will be for the taxpayer who will be paying more as she now has a unlimited amount of taxpayer money to spend.

Black voters voted for the black candidate. They’re the racist voters.

They didn’t vote for the electable candidate because of race, pure and simple.

That’s virtue-signaling and was more important to them than winning.

Stacy-crazy is capable of only playing her single race-sex-socialist card. Which works in downtown homosexual Atlanta, and the racist and immigrant-heavy (illegal alien) pockets of each downtown around it.

Two-thirds of Abrams’ donations came from out-of-state, mostly from CA and NY. Abrams says this is OK since Georgia is a “national state”.
