By one key measure, it is now official: This is the most authoritarian Congress in history.
The House Rules Committee, meeting in its ornate chamber on the third floor of the Capitol on Monday night, sent two bills to the House floor under closed rules that is, legislation that must be rubber stamped in toto, without being amended by so much as a comma. That brings the number of closed rules in this Congress to 84, beating the previous record of 83 set in 2014, according to the Democrats tally (a Republican tally counts one fewer). And heres the truly remarkable part: Republicans have another seven months in this Congress to run up the score.
There are various explanations for this. But what this means in practical terms is the GOP majority has used parliamentary maneuvers to block votes on amendments to legislation that would likely pass with broad bipartisan support on outsourcing jobs, immigration, gun safety, disaster relief, Social Security, Medicare, the environment, prescription drug costs, Pell Grants, national security, criminal-justice reform, veterans benefits, drinking water, child nutrition and maternal health.

The House Rules Committee is America?
Diana. Conservatives have been using the “banana state” thing for many moons. Why can’t you uneducated, dumbass liberals come up with an original thought of your own.
But the Conservative in me says, "Dana, we on the Right don't trust the RINO's either. We are for joining Trump in dismantling the Deep State and the Establishment. This sort of crap certainly looks like Establishment tactics to try to defend their positions of power. It needs to be examined.
Pretty crazy isn’t it?
Dana, it might be like the Constitution, if it is followed it might bring better government.
How about voting on something for its merit without tacking on several amendments. It might make government better for the people.
This Milbank girl is a drama queen.
This is not anything remotely new or exclusive to one party. If not done on certain bills and that bill gets ‘killer’ amendments the bill will die in the Senate. The opposition party always like to make a statement “We are relevant” and some of the only ways to so is to gum up legislation with amendments after amendment after amendment.
The golden rule. Do unto others before they do unto you!
A CIA asset!
Dana,
Report, don’t try to force your opinions. It is what journalists are supposed to do for a living, report.
Every reporter out there has a grandiose illusion that their opinions are what needs to be propagated.
The only opinion that comes out of it all is that you value your opinion more than the actual events occurring. Get over it.
The most authorian was in the 69s with the phony Great Docuety and immigration BS
And look at the mess decades later, Diana
With all of Trump’s tweets and EOs, I forgot we even had a legislature.
Constitutionally mandated Oversize is “auhtoritrain”?
Just how utterly stupid are these clowns at the Washinton Post?
What IS actually “authoritarian” is this claiming the DOJ is above any legal restraints or over-site.
Milhouse is such a hoot. Such derangement, such cognitive dissonance.
This morning I Heard Chuck U Schumer and Nancy Pelosi saying THEY were going to ‘Drain the Swamp’.
(Nancy said Trump had become the Swamp now!)
