May 19 (UPI) -- Everyone is "considered a customer" and purchases are not required to use Starbucks cafes, including its restrooms, according to a new policy announced Saturday.
The policy change comes a month after a Philadelphia Starbucks manager called police about two black men who were sitting inside the restaurant waiting for a friend without ordering anything.
The policy announcement, sent via a letter to employees, said that "any person who enters our spaces, including patios, cafes and restrooms, regardless of whether they make a purchase, is considered a customer," The Wall Street Journal reported.
Previously, company's guidelines were vague on how to treat lingering non-paying guests
You son of a gun! I just returned from lunch and read your post! I almost split a gut when I read it! You made my day!
I was thinking the same thing. This might be their death knell. On the other hand, great opportunity for anyone wanting to get into the coffee house business. A place for customers to associate with fellow . . customers, in the true sense of the word !

Starbucks: When you sh1t you are a customer
Watch how you tap, you might get a visit from Larry Craig.
Next, the policy will be that they have to offer these non-paying customers free coffee and snacks.
Starbucks soon to close because of trashed bathrooms.
How about bidits and showers for everyone?

Yeah, this will work out just fine.
Notice to the homeless: Forget the Union Mission, meet at Starbucks from now on. Warm, clean restrooms, comfortable over stuffed chairs, no questions asked. Go for it!
I think it will only take six months to a year for a noticeable drop in net income which will impact share prices.
When that occurs Starbucks will either change its policies or be sold. Also as other have pointed out here at FR, shareholder lawsuits will start and the board of directors may be forced to take action and change those policies.
At some point, they’ll have to offer hazard pay to anyone tasked with cleaning the bathrooms.
The homeless dont eat a lot of roughage.
They also better have disinfectant by the drum on hand because they also suffer from diarrhea more than most and sometime may not make it all the way to the stool before they let go.
My local Publix (large and very dominant SE grocery chain) just opened an in-store Starbucks. This Starbucks policy seems to mean that the Publix restroom is open to bums; I think this will be a problem Publix won’t enjoy and will likely fight. The opening of an in-store Starbucks is likely a trend which grocery stores will now want to reconsider.
The Philadelphia store where the two men were arrested had signs informing people the bathrooms and cafe were for paying customers only. Store guidelines for employees were to ask nonpaying guests to leave.
It goes to show this was not about racism at all but about two black guys who decided clearly stated rules did not apply to them.
is that where we're headed as a society? anyone trying to say blacks need to follow rules and obey laws are 'racist"? if so we are in deep trouble.
“Previously, company’s guidelines were vague on how to treat lingering non-paying guests”
They were not vague.
I look forward to hearing of street bums sleeping in Starbucks and drug deals made in their son to become filthy restrooms.
I now see no reason why you can’t. Look at Starbucks as more of a public park without the trees.
