A training exercise involving U.S. B-52 bombers and South Korean planes was scrapped earlier this week after the South Korean government expressed concerns that it could generate tensions before the summit meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to U.S. officials.
The move follows repeated assertions by the Trump administration that it is keeping up a campaign of maximum economic and military pressure until North Korea gives up its nuclear-weapons programs.
The South Koreans asked not to participate in what was intended to be a three-nation air drill involving the U.S., South Korea and Japan, the U.S. officials said. The U.S., which has sought to maintain political solidarity with Seoul during a turbulent period of diplomacy with North Korea, has not commented publicly on the South Korean decision.
The B-52s are currently executing their continuous bomber presence mission in the theater, which sometimes includes joint or allied interactions, said an official at the U.S. Pacific Command, without providing further details.

It sounds more like the South Koreans scrapped it.
I don’t trust the socialist weasels who run South Korea.
North Korea is bound and determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Kim could bring his country out of the 3rd world yet stay in power. Yet he seems determined to scuttle the talks before they start.
Kim’s manipulations seem to be working.
Whatever the reason, the image of an ancient and rebuilt B-52 throws fear in the hearts of those not closely aligned with the USA. It doesn’t seem to matter if it has nuclear or conventional or the modern multiple tube pod firing ordinance, it is an absolutely horrific weapons platform.
Small price to pay. To negotiate you have to show strength as Trump has. You also have to show a small bit of goodwill. So hold off the exercise for 3 weeks. If the summit was all BS, we can do this exercise next month. If they send their nukes to Oak Ridge it was well worth it.
If they don’t, we do the exercise next month. No big.
Love the 52. I feel like it’s one of the reasons I’m walking around today.
Zackly.
Throwing Kim a bone.
Smart.
5.56mm
We had 2 B-52s and a KC-135R tanker in the area during the exercise, confirmed.
Hard to say they weren’t part of the exercise?
Pull the Buffs.
Send in B-1s...
You have to see the B-52 in the Dayton Air Force Museum to experience the awe.
They are something to see.
I was sitting in a duck blind in 1976, S of Minot AFB when they did a scramble. Needless to say there wasn’t a duck for miles after that.
