New York Democratic leaders say they want more people to vote except they wont allow anyone but registered Democrats to vote in party primaries.
The New York State Democratic Party plans on blocking a proposed resolution at its May 23-24 convention that would allow independent or unaffiliated voters to vote in this years Democratic primary for governor.
New Yorks restrictive voting laws became a national embarrassment in 2016 as many younger voters realized they couldnt vote for Bernie Sanders in the presidential primary against Hillary Clinton because they missed the deadline to enroll as Democrats.

I really wish we would do that...though ironically I bet part of the reason trump winning some primaries was democrats trying to cause chaos in the primaries by voting for trump. So, thanks democrats
In this case....the democRATS are right.
If you’re not willing to join them, then why should these interlopers be allowed to choose the nominee for the party that they aren’t a member of.
All primaries should be closed.
So, I don’t have a problem with this.
McCain is a prime example of what open primaries can do.
Of course independents should not vote in party primaries.
The idea of it is absurd.
I might change and change back. Could be fun

>> they missed the deadline to enroll as Democrats
Well, that’s kinda ironic.
Florida Independents are trying to get open primaries in Florida. Same whining.
My wife has been trying to leave the Democrat Party in NY for almost 3 decades. Every time she sends in the form and gets her voter registration, it says she is a Democrat again. If it was me I’d go to the election board in person, but I just count myself lucky that my better half is pissed off at them and won’t vote DEM. I swear you’d be better off joining NVXIM in New York than the New York Democrats.
and his girlfriend from my state.
New York has always had closed primaries.
I would agree that primary elections, all of them, should 100% be about registered members of parties picking their party’s candidate. If the “not affiliated”/”independent” voters want to vote in primaries, then let them organize a way to have a “not affiliated”/”independent” candidate of their own on the ballot.
That’s unbelievable. Well, for NY, I guess not. Place is going to hell in a handbasket.
