When I was younger an expert was anyone with a briefcase that was more than 25 miles from home.
I wonder what makes one an ‘expert’ in an unsolved mystery...

The same thing that makes just about anyone an expert who was interviewed for or had their information cited in any article. The writer declares them an expert so they can make their thesis sound credible. If the article is speculative on it’s face, they wont build up the expertise credibility much. But if it’s full propaganda, such as say, man-made climate change, they will spend half the article attempting to fabricate credibility.
